Area briefs: Sherrill gets first save

Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) entered in the ninth inning Thursday night with a chance to earn his first save for the Helena (Mont.) Brewers.

He got the save and more in Helena's 5-4 victory against the Billings Mustangs.

Sherrill struck out the side in the top of the ninth, and he ended the game by striking out former A.L. Brown teammate Brett Bartles. Two of the three strikeouts were called, including the final one against Bartles.

Sherrill's ERA still stood at 9.64 after the save, his first in three chances. Bartles finished 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and saw his averaged dip to .222. Against Missoula a night earlier, Bartles had two hits and two RBIs.

- Parnell improving

Binghamton's Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA at the end of April, but he is now 7-4 with a 4.14 ERA.

In 16 starts, Parnell has struck out 64 and walked 43 in 87 innings.

- Coastal Plain League

Asheboro's Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) hit a three-run homer in the first inning to key a 6-1 victory against Gastonia on Wednesday.

Alex Fairweather (Catawba) allowed three runs and three hits in eight innings but got no decision in Asheboro's 4-3 loss against Gastonia on Tuesday.

Brett Hatley (West Rowan, Catawba) recently joined the Asheboro club.

* Wade Moore (West) is batting .327 with one homer and seven steals in 23 games for the Forest City Owls.

* Thomasville's Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus, Catawba) retired all three batters he faced in a 2-0 loss against Martinsville on Wednesday.

Ketner is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 10 relief appearances for the HiToms.

- Shive shines

Corbin Shive, a rising senior at East Rowan, pitched the South Charlotte Panthers to a 10-4 victory over Bullets Baseball, a Florida team, in the Panthers' opener in the USA 16-under Championships in Jupiter, Fla.

Shive (2-0) pitched five innings, struck out six and allowed eight hits and two runs.

- Southern Collegiate baseball

Morganton's Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) is having a great summer in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.

Lyerly, an all-star for Morganton in 2007, is batting .468 in 17 games. He has two homers, 12 RBIs and nine steals and has made only one error.

Morganton catcher Kevin McMillan (North Rowan, Catawba) is batting .190 with seven RBIs.

* Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) is batting .277 with two homers and 10 RBIs for Lake Norman in the SCBL. Lake Norman hurler Nick Daniels (NW Cabarrus) is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in six appearances.

- Ace at Country Club

Gloria Shoaf made her first career hole-in-one on No. 9 at the Country Club of Salisbury on Thursday.

Shoaf used a 9-wood on the 108-yard hole.

- Intimidators win again

The Kannapolis Intimidators defeated Greensboro 10-5 on Thursday for their third consecutive victory.

Christian Marrero and Logan Johnson hit home runs for the I's (5-3), who built a 4-1 lead in the second inning with RBI singles from Sergio Miranda and Dale Mollenhauer.

Mollenhauer went 4-for-5 with two doubles to lead Kannapolis, while Nick Mahin had a three-run doubled. Mahin and Miranda drove in three runs apiece.

Pitcher Jason Rice won his fourth consecutive game, going five innings.

- Carson hoops camp

The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.

The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

- Catawba soccer

Catawba soccer camp dates for this summer are June 29-July 3; and July 20-24.

- South Men of Summer

The South Rowan coaching staff invites all young men who are interested in playing football this fall at South to join the Men of Summer program.

The program runs from 7-10 a.m. Monday-Thursday. All participants should be at the fieldhouse by 6:50 a.m.
