Area sports briefs: Carter leads Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators rode Dexter Carter's 61/3 shutout innings to a 2-0 victory against Greensboro on Friday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

Carter allowed only an infield hit and struck out seven.

Drew Garcia drove in both Intimidators runs, scoring Eduardo Escobar with a third inning sacrifice fly and Brandon Short with a fielder's choice in the eighth.

Leroy Hunt pitched a perfect eighth inning, before Dan Remenowsky fired a shutout ninth inning for his ninth save of the season.

Even with the win, Kannapolis has been eliminated from the first half championship race. Lakewood has wrapped up the first-half title.

n Minor leagues

Kannapolis Intimidators catcher John Curtis was added to the Northern Division team for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game as an injury replacement.

n Wood bat leagues

Asheboro's Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) had a homer and three RBIs in an 8-5 loss against Peninsula on Friday. Lyerly had two hits Thursday in a 4-3 Coastal Plain League loss against Martinsville.

n Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) has helped the Forest City Owls get off to a 16-2 start in the CPL. Moore had a triple and scored twice Thursday. On Friday, he was 2-for-4, scored twice and stole a base in a 16-1 rout of Gastonia. n Rowan Amateur

The deadline for entries for the 31st Annual Horace Billings Rowan County Amateur Golf Tournament at Corbin Hills is July 8.

Entry fee is $20 and does not include green or cart fees.

Qualifying is July 10-12. In case of ties, a sudden-death playoff will be held on July 13.

The low 31 qualifiers and defending champion Ronnie Eidson advance to match play July 17-19. Residents of Rowan County or members of Rowan golf clubs are eligible.

n Baseball camp

The Piedmont Area Baseball Pitchers and Catchers Camp will be held June 29-30 at Central Davidson High. Camp is for ages 5-18. Cost is $60.

Featured instructor is Appalachian State head coach Chris Pollard, plus many more area coaches.

n East hoops camp

Brevard women's basketball coach Shannon Reid will be holding a camp at East Rowan High School from June 24-25.

The cost is $100 per player. The camp, which is for ninth-12th graders only, will run from 9 a.m. until noon and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. each day.

n Carson volleyball

There will be a volleyball clinic at Carson for grades 6-9 from 5-7 p.m. on June 22. Cost is $10.

There will also be a volleyball 101 offered to parents from 6:45-7:45 for $5 to discuss basics and rules. Show up ready to play.

n South YMCA

The South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through July 18 for its youth baseball league.

The program is for ages 6-12 as of April 30 of this year. The three age divisions are 6-7coach pitch, 8-9 player pitch and 10-12 player pitch (12-year-olds cannot pitch). Games begin Aug. 3.

The cost is $36 for members and $60 for potential members.

n McCanless golf

A nine-hole tournament for Junior was held at McCanless on Thursday.

Bryson Sprinkle shot 41 to win the 9-under division.

Logan Shuping shot 40, including a birdie on No. 17, to win the 10-13 division. Evan Neas was second at 42. Taylor Scharf was third with a 51.

The next Juniors tourney will be held July 2. The fee is $9 for non-members.

n Catawba softball

Catawba is offering an all-skills softball camp June 22-25 at Whitley Field on the college campus.

The camp is open for ages 6-18 and includes instruction from Catawba coaches and players. The camp runs from 9 until noon and costs $100.
