Area sports briefs: Kannapolis Legion tops Concord

The Kannapolis American Legion baseball team beat Concord 6-4 on Tuesday in a league game at Veterans Field.

John Tuttle struck out 14 hitters and earned the win.

Rashad Jackson, Jordan Phillips, Wes Honeycutt and Hunter Pate had two hits each for Kannapolis (2-2, 2-0).

Kannapolis is off tonight and plays a makeup game at South Rowan on Thursday that won't count in the divisional standings.

- Prep baseball

East Rowan's 3A playoff baseball game at Lake Norman was rained out Tuesday and rescheduled for tonight.

Tuscola won 9-7 against North Buncombe in the other Western semifinal game. Tuscola, a No. 3 seed, will hit the road to face an NPC foe for the first game of the best-of-three Western finals.n Peacock perfect

Devon Peacock was perfect against Corriher-Lipe on Tuesday in leading Southeast to a 10-0 victory that gave the Patriots the conference title outright.

Southeast (12-2, 10-2) receives a bye as the No. 1 seed in the Rowan Middle School Conference tournament, which begins Saturday morning at Corriher-Lipe.

Peacock retired all 18 hitters he faced, striking out seven. He also stroked a two-run homer for the Patriots.

Justin Evans had three hits. including a two-run homer. Chance Bowden also had two hits for coach Chris Lankford's club.

- Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators were rained out Tuesday.

The game with Hagerstown will be made up as part of a doubleheader Thursday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

- College track

UNC Pembroke freshman Jamel Allison (Mooresville) was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-America team.

Allison was fourth in the long jump at the Division II Outdoor National Championships in San Angelo, Texas.

Allison is UNCP's first track All-American since 1985.

- Overseas basketball

Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 16 points and 18 rebounds before fouling out in his most recent outing in the playoffs in Italy.

- Golf tournament

The seventh annual Cloninger Ford Invest in Youth golf tournament will be held on Saturday at Crescent.

The format is captain's choice. Registration is from 11:30 a.m.-noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $60 per golfer, and the field is limited to 120 players.

Catawba soccer camp dates are for boys and girls ages 5-18.

* June 14-18, half day

* June 19-July 2, half and full

* July 19-23, full and extended day

- Catawba basketball

Over the last 15 years, 13,859 boys and girls have attended coach Jim Baker's Catawba basketball camps, and 13 campers have signed basketball scholarships with Catawba.

Catawba's "Skills and Drills" camps focusing on individual improvement will be held June 15-18 at Catawba and June 22-25 at Covenant Classical School in Concord.

The camps are for ages 8-15 and run from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

- North boosters

The North Rowan High School boosters will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the media center.

Officers will be elected for the 2009-2010 school year. There will be discussion on projects such as the upcoming football season program. Anyone interested in running for an office is encouraged to attend.

- Carson camps

Carson basketball camp for boys and girls who will be in grades 2-6 will run from 9 a.m.-noon on July 13-16.

The gym opens at 8 a.m. Anyone interested should contact coach Brian Perry at 704-855-5039. The cost is $60.

* Carson's girls basketball program will hold a camp for rising fifth-eighth graders June 22-25 from 8 a.m. until noon daily.The cost is $60 and includes a camp T-shirt. Awards will be given for free throw and hot-shot champions.

- West baseball camps

West Rowan coach David Wright will hold a camp for all ages on Tuesday, June 16, from 9 a.m.-noon. The camp will be at West. This is a makeup of the Hurley camp that was washed out.

The cost is $20. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. on June 16.

* Wright's summer pitching camp will be held June 22-23 from 9 a.m. until noon for ages 9-14. The cost is $45.

* Wright's summer session I will be held July 14-16 from 9 a.m. until noon for ages 7-14. The cost is $65.

* Summer session 2 will be held July 28-30 from 9 a.m. until noon for ages 7-14. The cost is $65.

* Summer session 3 will be held Aug. 4-6 from 9 a.m. until noon for ages 7-14. The cost is $65.

* Hurley Y programs

Registration is ongoing for a Hurley YMCA T-Ball clinic and T-Ball and Coach Pitch leagues. The clinic starts June 1. Leagues start July 6.

* Registration for boys and girls basketball leagues (eighth grade and younger) runs from June 1-30. Games start July 6.
