Local Golf: Green, Kuld capture Welch tournament
E-mail to a friendBy Horace Billings Salisbury Post Monica Green and Mechelle Kuld posted an 8-under 64 and captured the championship of the 27th annual Edgar Welch Memorial for Rowan County women golfers at the Country Club of Salisbury on Thursday. Green and Kuld fired a net 60 in the first round Tuesday at Corbin Hills and took honors with a 36-hole net total of 20-under 124. They earned a 3-stroke victory. Defending champion Yvonne Barger and Sharon Miller carded a 17-under 127 for second place. They had a 60 in the first round and a 67 in the final round. Pat Cooke and Camille Reische, who led the first round of the tourney, shared third place at 128 with Joan Harris and Jo Shaw. Following with a 129 were Mary Seaford and Ruth Bowles. Joy Maughmer and Sharon Deal matched Shirley Baucom and Karla Swanson at 140 for the next spot. Barger and Miller also took second low gross with a 164. Susan Morris scored a hole-in-one on the par-3, 140-yard 17th hole and led her team to low gross with a 160 total. She used a five iron for her second ace. She teamed with Becky Isenhour.
