Cooke, Reische lead golf tourney

Pat Cooke and Camille Reische grabbed a two-stroke lead in the opening round of the 27th annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament at Corbin Hills on Tuesday.

Cooke and Reische posted a low net 14-under-par 58 to edge four teams for the lead after the first 18-hole round of the 36-hole event.

Sharing second place are defending champions Yvonne Barger and Sharon Miller with a 12-under 60.

Also tied for second are the teams of Jayne Hubbard-Janet Smith, Cyndi Carmazzi-D.J. Whitfield and Mechelle Kuld-Monica Green.

Net scores will decide the championship. Low gross winners also will be honored.

Next with net 62s were Beth Calhoun-Toni Iossi and Joan Harris-Jo Shaw.

Following with a 64 were Mary Seaford-Ruth Bowles. Next were Susan Morris-Becky Isenhour and Shirley Baucom-Karla Swanson with 65s.

A pair of teams took the lead in the loss gross bracket with 77s. They were Barger-Miller and Morris-Bowles.

Calhoun-Iossi followed with a 79. Next were Jean Hill-Wanda Sanders with a 79.

The final round of the event will be played Thursday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

A luncheon and awards program will follow.
