Area briefs: Hannon gets ace at Irish Creek

From staff reports

Kannapolis golfer Olan Hannon apologized for shooting an 80 at the Club at Irish Creek on Saturday.

"But I guess it's not too bad," Hannon said. "Not for a 72-year-old with back trouble."

The Club at Irish Creek is a tough layout, and its ravines coaxed a couple of double bogeys out of Hannon.

Still, he made one shot he'll always remember.

Hannon pulled out his 7-iron on the 146-yard No. 15 hole and knocked in his 10th career hole-in-one. That's right — his 10th.

"Eight at the old Kannapolis Country Club and one at Mount Mitchell," Hannon said. "This is the first one on this course."

Hannon was playing with Darrell Fullem, Barry Bagwell , Bill Mason and Chris Newsome.

The Club at Irish Creek plays 6,847 yards from the back tees and opened in 2007.

- Catawba to play Florida Tech

Catawba (40-16) opens play in the South Regional baseball tournament in Tampa on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Florida Tech.

Catawba is the No. 3 seed, while Florida Tech (35-18-1) is seeded fourth.

The tournament runs through May 18, and the winner moves on to national competition.

The SAC has three teams in the event. No. 2 Tusculum (40-13) will play fellow SAC member Carson-Newman (41-16), the No. 5 seed, in the first round. No. 1 seed Tampa (38-9-1) will face No. 6 Stillman (26-24).

It marks the second time in three years and third time in the past five seasons that the Indians have made the postseason tournament. Catawba also made the trip to Tampa in 2006 and advanced to the regional final.

This season, Catawba won the regular season SAC Championship and reached 40 wins for the third time in school history.
