Area briefs: Wolfpack falls in title game

Blair Harkey (West Rowan) ended her college softball career in N.C. State's 2-0 loss to Virginia Tech in the ACC tournament championship game on Sunday.

Harkey went 0-for-2, but she chased down a flyball in the warning track in the fifth with the bases loaded.

Virginia Tech earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. North Carolina, Florida State and Georgia Tech received at-large bids. East Carolina and Campbell are also in the field.

N.C. State (31-27) was left out of the brackets despite 15 wins against teams ranked in the top 75 in RPI and victories over North Carolina and Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament.

- College baseball

Appalachian State's Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) pitched two scoreless innings to close out a 4-2 victory against Furman on Sunday.

- Middle school track

Erwin's boys won the Rowan County Conference track meet and haven't lost a meet the last three seasons.

Erwin champions included Brad Oden (800 and 1600), Spencer Chapman (pole vault), and the 4x100 relay team of Joseph Furtado, Jonathan Lowe, Jeremy Sapp and Justin Smith.

- 4A track meet

New Bern's boys won the 4A state track meet in Greensboro on Saturday, while Butler won the girls competition.

In the girls meet, Davie County's Tamika Reynolds finished sixth in the triple jump and the long jump.

- Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost to visiting Lakewood 11-2 on Sunday in a game halted by rain and wet conditions in the ninth inning.

Ronnie Gaines hit his second homer in three days for the Intimidators.

Kannapolis opens a four-game series with Delmarva at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium tonight at 7:05 p.m.

* Dewayne Wise hit two of Charlotte's five homers to lead the Knights to a 10-6 victory over visiting Toledo on Sunday.

The teams play again tonight in Fort Mill, S.C., at 7:15 p.m. Dontrelle Willis is scheduled to make a rehab start on the mound for Toledo. Willis has won 68 big-league games and was the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year with the Florida Marlins.

- Welch golf tournament

The first round of the 27th annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament for Rowan County women gets started Tuesday at 9 a.m. with 18 holes at Corbin Hills.

A shotgun start will be used for the 18 two-member teams.

The final 18 holes will be played Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Country Club of Salisbury. A luncheon and awards ceremony will follow.

Yvonne Barger and Sharon Miller are defending champions.

Tuesday's first-round pairings with tee assignment are listed in today's Scoreboard.

- Ex-Knight to Jets

Former North Davidson and Wake Forest athlete Nick Jarvis has signed a free-agent contract with the New York Jets.

Jarvis is a 6-foot-3, 271-pound long snapper.

- McCanless Couples

The McCanless Couples traveled to Whispering Woods Golf Course on Saturday.

Fourteen golfers participated.

Closest to the pin was won by Monica Green. Longest putt was by Brett Leslie.

- Charity golf event

The Katherine Anderson Society will hold its fifth annual charity golf tournament on Friday, May 16, 2008, at the championship course at Tanglewood Park.

A portion of tournament proceeds will support future KAS community service projects as well as supplement the cost for students to attend the National Conference of the Academy of Physician Assistants in May 2008.

In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Amos Cottage Therapeutic Day Program.

The tournament has a best-ball format.

- Bobby Jackson camp

The 12th annual Bobby Jackson Basketball Camp will be held on July 20-24.

* The Bobby Jackson Summer League for boys and girls costs $50 per player.

There will be a girls league and boys leagues for middle school and high school. Registration is TBA. Opening ceremonies for the league are on June 13. Games will be played at Salisbury, Livingstone and Hall Gym.

- Carson girls hoops

Carson's Lady Cougar Middle School Basketball Camp will be held on June 16-19 from 8 a.m. until noon each day.

The camp is for girls who will be in grades 6-8. The cost is $50.

All campers will receive a T-shirt. Awards will be given for the free-throw and Hot Shot winners.

- Catawba football camp

The Catawba Football Camp will be held July 7-9.

- Carson boys hoops

The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.

The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

- Kannapolis hoops camp

A.L. Brown basketball camp dates are June 16-19, July 7-10 and July 28-31.

Camp runs from 9-1 each day at Kannapolis Middle School.

Cost is $55 for each week.

- Carson football camp

Carson Youth Football Camp for grades 3-8 will be held May 12-15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Carson head coach Mark Woody and his staff will conduct the camp, along with guest coaches from Southeast and China Grove.

This is a non-contact camp designed to work on position skill development and fundamentals and conditioning.

Cost is $35 for players who register early — before May 1. Cost is $40 for registration from 3-4:30 p.m. on the first day of camp
