National briefs: Garcia ahead after Round 1

Associated Press

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Sergio Garcia put together his third straight impressive round at The Players Championship. The first two gave him a runner-up finish last year. The 6-under 66 on Thursday was only a great start.

Garcia built a two-shot lead on the Stadium Course, and it was a good step toward ending an 0-for-53 drought on the PGA Tour.

Kenny Perry and Paul Goydos had 68s, and Phil Mickelson shot 70.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

DURHAM — Duke offensive tackle Cameron Goldberg, a senior, has been reinstated following a suspension for breaking team rules.

Goldberg, who started all 12 games last year, was suspended from all football-related activities in April. In a statement, coach David Cutcliffe said Goldberg “has done everything I asked him to do in a timely manner.”

* CLEMSON, S.C. — Anthony Simmons and former women’s basketball coach Jim Davis are among eight people named to the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.

NFL

CLEVELAND — Browns linebacker Willie McGinest said the 2008 season will be his last. He told SI.com that he wants to finish his career with one last playoff run.

n RICHMOND, Va. — A federal judge ordered imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick to repay more than $2.4 million to a Canadian bank for defaulting on a loan.

The Royal Bank of Canada sued Vick in September, arguing his guilty plea to a federal dogfighting charge prevented him from repaying the loan.

TENNIS

ROME — Andy Roddick and James Blake advanced at the Rome Masters, marking the first time in six years that two Americans have reached the quarterfinals.

n BERLIN — Justine Henin lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to Dinara Safina in the third round of the German Open.
