North Rowan's baseball team lost 11-1 in six innings at West Montgomery on Tuesday in YVC play.
The Cavaliers (3-3, 3-2) got off to a good start, scoring in the first inning when Wesley Barker doubled home Dakota Brown, but WM pitcher Waylan Lineberry shut down North after that.
North had six hits, including two each by Barker and Jeff Nelson.
Jake Smith took the loss.
Aided by three North errors, West Montgomery scored six runs in the second to take control.
* A.L. Brown suffered a wild 5-4 SPC loss to Central Cabarrus.
On one of the more bizarre plays, Brown catcher Zach Wright lost his grip on the baseball while transferring it from his mitt to his throwing hand, and the ball went ricocheting off walls as runners advanced.
The Wonders led 4-1, but Central scored two unearned runs in the fifth and got two more in the seventh on a walk, error and two bloop singles.
Alex Brandon started and pitched two scoreless innings for the Wonders. Dylan May relieved in the third. He struck out 10 in five innings but took the loss.
John Tuttle had a two-run double for the Wonders, and Wes Honeycutt had a run-scoring double that knocked in Zach Jones.
Brown has moved today's scheduled game with East Meck to Saturday afternoon.
* Also in the SPC, Northwest Cabarrus nipped Mt. Pleasant 4-3.n Davie dropped its CPC opener 11-3 to Reagan. It was the first loss for the War Eagles (4-1, who got RBIs from Carson Herndon, Jacob Barber and Alex Newman.
Ryan Foster took the loss.
"We're disappointed, but we know we're much better than this," Davie coach Mike Herndon said. "We walked eight and we hadn't walked eight in four games and two scrimmages."
ECU-bound Austin Blake went 3-for-4 for Reagan.
* East Rowan's NPC game at Statesville was moved back to this afternoon, along with the West Iredell-North Iredell NPC contest.
* CCC club East Davidson lost to Ledford 14-4. Keaton Hawks homered for the Golden Eagles (2-3). Brian Connolly and Jonathan Shelton went deep for the Panthers.
- Cavaliers honored
North Rowan junior Javon Hargrave was named Player of the Year for YVC boys basketball. The husky junior averaged 12.8 points a game for the league's regular-season champs. He was joined on the All-YVC squad by teammates Pierre Givens and Oshon West.
North's Kelly Everhart was named CCC Coach of the Year, nipping runner-up Al Andrew of Albemarle. Albemarle won the conference tournament.
* North's Symphony Roberts and Teaunna Cuthbertson were named to the All-YVC girls basketball team.
YVC Player of the Year was Sienna Courie of Chatham Central. Chatham's Gerald Binkley was named Coach of the Year.
* North's Damon Ellis and Maurice Gallon were named to the All-YVC wrestling team.
- Prep soccer
Salisbury's girls soccer team beat North Rowan 5-0 on Tuesday. Madison Kennedy had a hat trick for the Hornets (4-2-1).
Sierra Davis and Marlee Murphy also scored goals.
Kennedy, Jenna Bryan, Karen Presnell, Katie Washington and Kristen Harman had assists. It was the first helper of the season for both Washington and Harman.
SHS basketball standout Olivia Rankin made her debut in goal. She was credited with the shutout, although Salisbury's defense prevented the Cavaliers from taking a shot on goal.
Salisbury played without Katherine Heidt (concussion).
"Katherine's our leading scorer, and Sierra Davis just played outstanding in her absence," Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. "North played a good game, fought us hard all the way. They've improved a great deal in the past two weeks."
- Prep track
East Rowan's boys scored 145 points and won a track meet on Tuesday against Salisbury (64), Davie (41) and Concord (15).
Andrew May and Nathan Robbins won two events each for East. May won the 110 hurdles (16.52 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (42.15), while Robbins took the shot (47 feet, 21/2 inches) and discus (135-0).
Ben Hancock won the 400 (53.8), Evan Webb won the pole vault (11-6), and Ross Oden was first in the the 3200 (10:35).East's 4x800 relay team of Hunter Arey, Preston Dixon, Oden and Landon Beattie won in 8:52, and East's 4x400 team of Joseph Furtado, Cody Ludwick, Evan Hiatt and Arey won in 3:50.
East got second-place efforts from Jonathan Lowe (110 hurdles), Sam Sherman (shot), Cole Honeycutt (1600 and 3200), Greysen Gordy (discus), Marquise Weddington (triple jump), Furtado (400), Dillon Arey (pole vault), Beattie (800) and Luke Wilkinson (200).
* Salisbury got sprint wins from Romar Morris in the 100 (10.58) and 200 (21.76).
Darien Rankin won the long jump (19-61/2), Nick Summers took the 800 (2:03) and 1600 (4:54), and Dominique Phillips won the triple jump (40-1).
Rankin was second in the high jump, and the Hornets' 4x800 relay team took second.
* West Rowan's boys and Carson's girls won a county tri-meet held at South Rowan on Tuesday.

- Prep golf
Statesville shot 163 and won an NPC golf match at Warrior on Monday.
East Rowan was second at 168. Jared Hough shot 38, Mason Preslar had a 40, Preston Rogers shot 44, and James Lohr carded a 46.
* West Rowan was third at 185, with Coleman Phifer (43), James Decoster (46), Spencer White (47) and Christian Hedrick (49) leading the way.
* Carson shot 191 for fourth place. Ryan Craft shot 46 to lead the Cougars. Other scorers were Matt Yates (47), Colby Smith (47), Christian Shuping (51) and Andrew Purcell (51).
* South Rowan was sixth at 196. Corey Christy (46), Luke Rary (48), Josh Lowder (51) and Andrew Moody (51) scored for the Raiders.
- Jayvee baseball
Jacob Watson was the winning pitcher, tossing a three-hitter as West Rowan's jayvees beat Carson 3-2 on Tuesday.
Louis Kraft and Grant Beatty cracked two hits each for the Falcons (2-2, 1-1 NPC), and Justin Evans knocked in a big run.
* South Rowan's jayvees scored nine runs in the first inning and topped Salisbury 16-4.
- College baseball
Matt Ingold (South Rowan) produced two RBIs for UNC Pembroke in a 6-3 win against St. Andrews on Tuesday.
* Pfeiffer lost 11-3 to 13th-ranked Francis Marion on Tuesday. Myles Pearl hit a two-run homer for the Falcons (13-16).
* Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) had two RBIs for Appalachian State in a 10-9 win against Columbia on Tuesday.
* Trey Holmes and Zach Smith (East Rowan) have helped Pitt Community College climb to a No. 2 ranking among the nation's D-I junior colleges.
- Strongmen wanted
The Strongest Man at the Hurley YMCA Contest (Round 2) will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Cash and prizes go to the winners in various classes. The entry fee is $25.
The competition is open for public viewing with a $1 admission charge for non-members.
Primary sponsors are James Davis, Cheerwine and F&M Bank.
- College basketball
Top-seeded Augusta State beat Montevallo 79-71 on Tuesday to win the Southeast Regional.
Ben Magden scored 28 points for Augusta State (29-3). Freddy Little hit five 3s and scored 23 for No. 7 seed Montevallo (25-8).
- ASU Pro Day
Six former Appalachian State football players auditioned for NFL scouts on Tuesday during ASU's Pro Day activities.
Working out were defensive tackle Malcolm Bennett, quarterback Armanti Edwards, tight end Tim Frye, DB Cortez Gilbert, linebacker Jacque Roman and defensive tackle Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus).
The Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins were on hand to evaluate the former Mountaineers.
- College softball
Catawba's softball team split at Mount Olive on Monday, rolling 8-4 before losing 6-2 to break a 10-game winning streak.
Brittany Murray (13-1) won again for the Indians (19-10).
Allie Marshall homered in the opener.
Tara Gibbs connected for her 11th homer in the nightcap.
