Catawba's baseball team split a doubleheader with 13th-ranked Kutztown at Newman Park on Monday.

Catawba fell behind 12-0 and dropped the first game 12-6.

Wade Moore (West Rowan) and Zeb Link (West) homered for the Indians. Garrett Furr had two hits, while Corey Parker had two RBIs.

Catawba (14-6) romped 18-4 in the nightcap against the Bears (8-1). Link hit a grand slam. Moore knocked in three runs, and Brett Underwood and Josh Hohn had two RBIs each. John Neese, Brett Huffman (West) and Furr had two hits apiece.

Brett Hatley (West) was the winning pitcher. He worked into the fifth inning of the seven-inning game and got relief help from Wil Huneycutt and Clay Watson.

Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) extended his streak of reaching base safely to 59 straight games as he drew a walk in his final at-bat of the opener, then had a hit and two walks in the nightcap.

- College baseball

Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) is off to a strong start for Appalachian State. The senior catcher is batting .333 with two homers and nine RBIs.

ASU infielder Wes Hobson is batting .429. He's the son of former North Rowan athlete Gil Hobson.

* Mount Olive's Craig Beasley (West Rowan) is 1-0 in three relief appearances this season. He picked up a win with 31/3 scoreless innings against Shippensburg.

- Prep football

West Rowan coach Scott Young announced Timmy Pangburn and Eli Goodson will play in the East-West All-Star Game in July.

Pangburn, an offensive lineman, and Goodson, a defensive lineman, have signed with Catawba.

- Pro football

Defensive lineman Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) has been working out and training in Duluth, Ga., for East Carolina's Pro Day for scouts.

- Prep boys tennis

West Rowan stayed unbeaten by taking a 9-0 victory against NPC opponent Carson on Monday.

Jesse Myers, Joel Brittain, Chris Holmes, Ricky Meek, D.J. Petrea and Landon Locklear recorded singles wins for the Falcons (4-0, 3-0).

Myers-Brittain, Holmes-Locklear and Meek-Kevin Robinson took doubles wins.

* Salisbury's boys tennis team dropped a total of two games in a 9-0 victory over South Rowan on Monday.

Steven Page, Austin Flynn, Alan Lebowitz, Lewis Young, Seth Gentry and Alex Weant won in singles for the Hornets (2-0).

Flynn-Lebowitz, Luke Mowery-Wes McNeely and Braxton Whitaker-Sam Lewis prevailed in doubles.

- 7th-grade hoops

Erwin's unbeaten girls rolled against West Rowan 42-18 on Monday.

Kaleigh Troutman's 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals led the Eagles.

Erwin (11-0, 10-0) also got eight points from Kelli Fisher and seven points and four assists from Erin Hatley. Amani Ajayi scored five points, and Kennedy Lambert had five steals.

West Rowan (3-7) was led by Hunter Gibbons with eight points. Elizabeth Freeze added five points for the Bulldogs.

* West Rowan's boys stayed undefeated with a 39-33 win against Erwin.

The Bulldogs (10-0) were led by Alexis Archie's 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Marquez McCain and Celexus Long scored nine points each for the winners.

Connor Honeycutt paced Erwin (7-4, 7-3) with 10 points. Harrison Bell had seven points and seven rebounds. Seth Wyrick had five points and seven boards. Jack Weisensel added eight rebounds.

- Intimidators news

The Kannapolis Intimidators are embarking on what is believed to be a unique promotion in Minor League Baseball.

New for this season, anyone that shows U.S. Military ID — active or retired — or family member ID at the Intimidators Will Call window will receive two free tickets to a game. This offer is valid for all 70 home games in the upcoming season.

"We are aware of the sacrifices being made, not just by our military personnel, but also their families," Intimidators General Manager Randy Long said. - DeSanto gets KO

Spencer's Dominic DeSanto scored a first-round KO against Anthony Woodard in his fight Saturday in Charlotte.

DeSanto dropped Woodard after 40 seconds with a straight left and finished him with a combination.

DeSanto is 5-0-1 and plans to fight again in Charlotte on April 10. Call 704-636-7896 for ticket information.

- College softball

Livingstone's softball team swept Voorhees 17-6 and 16-1 for its first two wins of the season.

Amanda Short, Sheniqua Harrison and Oni-Ire Brevard had three RBIs apiece in the first game.

* Mars Hill's Lindsey Barrier (East Rowan) has started all 12 games for the Lions (11-1) this season. She has two doubles and has scored seven runs.

- Catawba camps

Information on Catawba basketball camps to be held in Concord and Salisbury in June and July can be found at www.e-timeout.com.

Camps are available for levels from age 5 to 17.

- Women's hoops

Appalachian State freshman Anna Freeman (East Davidson) was named to the second team on the All-Southern Conference Tournament team.

Freeman had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks against Furman.

* South Carolina State plays today against Coppin State in the first round of the MEAC tournament at 1:30 p.m. at Joel Coliseum.

No. 8 seed S.C. State is led by senior Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan), who is averaging 14.5 points a game.

- Prep golf

Salisbury finished second to North Lincoln at Fox Den on Monday.

North Lincoln, the defending state champ, shot 146, while the Hornets carded a 153 total.

South Iredell shot 164, and Lincolnton checked in at 218.

Salisbury's Roy Dixon was medalist with a 3-under 33.

Troy Beaver shot 39, and Clark Alcorn had a 40. Alex Nianouris and Alex Lee shot 41s.

Zack Lawing led North Lincoln with a 34.

"We have nothing to be ashamed of today," Salisbury coach Dale Snyder said. "We played good, but to beat the defending state champs, you have to play great. North Lincoln earned their titles last year, and they are still the team to beat."

- College golf

Catawba's men's golf team finished in a tie for third in a field of 17 at the Tusculum Invitational, which concluded on Sunday at Link Hills Country Club.

Lenoir-Rhyne took the title with a 564, topping Tusculum by 10 shots. Catawba finished at 578.

Catawba's Jonathan Clapp posted the best score for the Indians at 143.

He finished ninth.

* Virginia's Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 78-70 — 148 in the first two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. Collins was No. 3 for Virginia and in 37th overall heading into today's final round.
