Thomas Allen pitched six shutout innings as East Rowan won 3-0 at Alcovy (Ga.) in its baseball season opener on Thursday.
Allen fanned seven, walked one and needed only 69 pitches. Parker Gobbel allowed three hits in the seventh but also struck out three for the save.
"Allen was the man today," said East coach Brian Hightower. "He got ahead of hitters all day."
Preston Troutman led East at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort. Justin Morris scored twice.
"We scratched out a few runs, but we couldn't get a big, two-out hit," Hightower said. "Should've scored a lot more."
East continues its Georgia tour against Eastside today.
* North Rowan overpowered South Davidson 14-4 in a makeup game to improve to 2-0 in the YVC.
Matt Laurens pitched four innings and struck out eight Wildcats.
"We were down 2-0 after two innings, and I was starting to wonder what was going on," North coach Rob Linder said. "We broke out the bats in the third."
North's five-run third included four consecutive doubles by Wesley Barker, Kyle Munday, Matt Mauldin and Hunter Feezor.
Mauldin and Feezor had three doubles apiece and Mauldin ended the game by the 10-run rule with a double in the sixth.
Mauldin had four hits, while Munday and Feezor had three apiece.
North plays at home against Gray Stone on Tuesday.
* Salisbury made up its postponed season opener at Statesville and rolled 10-3 on Thursday.
The Hornets put together a six-run third inning that included key hits by Nolan Meyerhoeffer and Scott Van der Poel.
Meyerhoeffer homered for the Hornets, while Clint Veal, Brian Bauk and Kyle Wolfe combined to limit Statesville to four hits while striking out eight batters.
"I couldn't be more pleased," Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. "We sent two freshmen and a sophomore out there today and they pitched like seasoned veterans."
Salisbury is at home against A.L. Brown on Friday.
- Prep wrestling
Davie's Buddy Lowery has been named CPC Coach of the Year, and Davie state champion Michael Waters was named the CPC's Most Outstanding Wrestler from 103-140 pounds.
War Eagles joining Waters on the All-CPC team were Ryan Smith, Matt Garretson, Jessie Hilton, Toby Lowe, Jonathan Hupp, Shane Carter, Ricky Bell, Kevin Whitley, Tony Danati, Cole Blankenship, Trevon Faulkner and Zack Vernon.
- Prep football
Joe Gaddis, 57, has been named Lexington's new football coach, pending school board approval.
The veteran replaces Chris Deal, who left Lexington to coach Patton, a Burke County school.
The Lexington Dispatch reported Gaddis has a career mark of 237-95 and won a state championship at Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 1991. He's most recently coached at Henry County in Paris, Tenn.
- Prep golf
Salisbury's boys golf team shot 154 to win a match at McCanless on Thursday.
East Rowan (164), Carson (173), South Rowan (189) and West Rowan (193) followed the Hornets.
Salisbury's Clark Alcorn was medalist with a 36. Alex Nianouris (37), Roy Dixon (40), Troy Beaver (41) and Alex Lee (41) were other leaders for the Hornets.
James Lohr (39) and Jarred Hough (40) led East.
Matt Yates (42) and Christian Shuping (42) paced Carson.
Josh Lowder (44) and Andrew Moody (45) led South.
Spencer White (44) and Chase Adkins (47) topped West Rowan.
- Prep soccer
Meredith Sokolowski scored eight goals and Jade Lomax had one as North Rowan's girls soccer team beat YVC foe South Davidson 9-1 on Thursday.
Due to injuries, North competed most of the game with 10 players.
- DCCC hoops
Davidson County Community College takes on Montgomery College (N.Y.) at home on Saturday with a berth in the Elite Eight on the line.
- North Hills hoops
The North Hills varsity girls ended their season with a third-place tournament finish.
In a 76-12 win against Carolina International, Laura Butner had 26 points while Abbey Lane had 22.
* In a 33-27 semifinal loss to Countryside, Butner scored 12 points, and Madison Link had six.
* North Hills won the third-place game by beating Mooresville Christian 52-39.
Lane scored 16 points. Caley Boggs had 12.
- College baseball
Pfeiffer's baseball team lost to 23rd-ranked Lander 14-5 at Ferebee Field on Thursday.
* Matt Ingold (South Rowan) drove in a run in UNC Pembroke's 17-3 win against Belmont Abbey on Thursday.
Forrest Buchanan (Salisbury) had a scoreless relief outing for BA, and Caleb Shore (South) went 2-for-2 at the plate.
- Catawba men's tennis
Catawba lost to Mars Hill 6-3 on Wednesday but the Indians beat Bluefield State on Thursday.
Tom McCormack and Cyle Petersen won in singles and doubles for Catawba (6-5) against Bluefield.
- Women's tennis
Catawba's women's tennis team topped Mars Hill 5-4 for its first SAC win on Wednesday. Steffi Cook, Candace Hall and Maggie McKee won in singles and doubles for Catawba (5-5, 1-1).
- AAU Phenoms
AAU Phenoms basketball tryouts will be held this weekend at West Rowan Middle.
* 13U, 7th-grade boys: Saturday 3-5 p.m. and Sunday 3-5.

South Rowan will play at Mount Pleasant and Carson will play at Cox Mill in makeup baseball games on Saturday afternoon.
- Baseball camp
East Rowan High School will host a one-day fielding and baserunning camp March 13 for players in grades 1-12.
East Rowan head coach Brian Hightower will direct the program in conjunction with U.S. Baseball Academy. The session will last for three hours. The cost is $50. Space is limited. Registration is now under way. For more information, call toll-free 866-622-4487.
- Horseshoes
The Cabarrus County Ringers Horseshoe League opens its 14th season on April 1. Matches are played on Mondays and Thursdays behind the YMCA on West C Street.
Starting times will be 5:45 p.m. through April and 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. the rest of the season.

South Rowan YMCA is accepting teams through Feb. 1 for its Adult Church League Basketball program.
Forms can be picked up at the front desk. The cost is $425 per team.
There is a mandatory coaches meeting on Monday, Feb. 1. Games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in mid-February.
* South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through Feb. 6 for its high school boys basketball league.
The program is for boys in grades 9-12. Practice starts mid-February and games begin after the regular high school basketball season is finished.
The fee is $36 for members and $60 for potential members.

- Tennis clinics
The Catawba spring tennis clinics begin Feb. 28, with beginners from 2-3 p.m. and advanced players from 3-4.
The cost of each clinic is $10.
Please call ahead to reserve your spot in the Sunday afternoon clinics. Space will be limited with no more than six in each group.
Members of the Catawba tennis teams will help serve as the instructors.
Each clinic will consist of conditioning, instruction, games and match play.

- Spencer Little League
Spencer Little League/Franklin Ellis Pee Wee League will hold baseball and softball registrations on Feb. 6 from 9-2 at Eighth Street Ballpark in Spencer.
You may also register at Ellis Park during the week during park hours.
Cost is $50 for ages 4-12 and $70 for ages 13-16.

- KidSports clinics
KidSports baseball spring training will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. through Feb. 24.
Clinics are for boys and girls ages 4-12. They are grouped by age and ability level.
Each baseball clinic is $10 or packages of four for $35, eight for $65 or 12 for $95.
Players will work on hitting, bunting, fielding, pitching, catching, core strength and agility drills. Players will receive detailed descriptions of all drills and skills covered in the clinics and practice drills for home.
