Area sports briefs: North girls lose

North Rowan’s girls fell Lake Norman Charter 46-33 Monday in the opening round of the state 1A playoffs.

Lake Norman jumped out to a 28-8 lead at halftime. North closed to within five points but drew no closer as its season ended with a 9-15 record.

Demaria Robinson scored 13 points for North in the losing effort. Teaunna Cuthbertson had 10.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” North coach Tony Hillian said. “I thought we had a pretty good season. One of our goals was to make the playoffs and we accomplished that.”

• Davie got 32 points and five 3-pointers from Nate Jones in an 88-77 victory over Greensboro Smith in the first round of the 4A sectionals at home.

The War Eagles led 38-29 at halftime and upped the margin to 15 in the final minutes.

Davie (18-6) also got 20 points from Shannon Dillard and 19 from Cody Martin.

• Charlotte Harding defeated A.L. Brown’s boys 81-55. Tevin Stark and Derrick Copeland scored 12 points apiece.

• A.L. Brown’s girls fell 56-20 to Ledford.

Ledford acquired a 13-1 lead after one quarter and led 30-5 at halftime. Endia Cannon led the Wonders with seven points.

• South Davidson’s boys (21-4) used some late Taylor Hatfield free throws to deefat Bishop McGuinness 67-62.

Taylor Hatfield led Jim Young’s Wildcats with 22 points, while twin Austin scoreed 18. Wil Collins had 11 and David Whitaker 10.

• South Davidson’s girls (18-6) used 17 points from Madi Beeson to deefat South Stanly 49-31.

Hunter Sigmon scored 14.

Livingstone hoops

Livingstone’s mens’ basketball earned a 74-65 win Monday at Fayetteville State.

It marked the third-straight CIAA win for the Blue Bears as they moved into a three-way tie for second place in the southern divison.

A 10-0 run gave the Blue Bears a 17-5 lead. They led 41-31 at halftime and 49-34 early in the second half.

Livingstone got 19 points from Greg Henry and 13 points and 11 rebounds from Nasir Austin. Omar Ford-Bey added 13 points. The Blue Bears shot 43.6 percent from the field and a 41.7 percent rate from behind the arc.

Livingtone will take on Johnson C. Smith Saturday in Charlotte. With a win, the Blue Bears can finish no lower than third in their divison.

• Livingstone’s women dropped a 78-71 decision at Fayetteville State.

Montiya Harrison got a season-high 19 points for Livingstone, who overcame a 19-point deficit, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Jasmine Murray added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

North Hills hoops

The North Hills varsity boys will host Grace Christian tonight at 7 in the first round of the NCISA State Tournament.

North Hills enters postseason play 17-8 in the SPAA. Grace Christian carries a 22-5 record. The winner will face the winner of the Flora Macdonald/Ridgecroft game.

NH’s middle school boys’ team plays at home against Statesville Montessori at 5 p.m.
