Area athlete update ....

The Post has tracked area athletes in every college sport from bowling to gymnastics, but here's a new one.

Kelsey Neumann (China Grove) is a freshman goaltender for the women's hockey team at Clarkson University in New York.

That's ice hockey, not field hockey.

Neumann isn't a graduate of Carson or South Rowan. Her high school dipoma is from the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vt., where she recorded 17 shutouts for the school team.

Clarkson made her college debut in goal in a 4-2 loss to St. Lawrence last week. Clarkson was credited with 22 saves.

Women's basketball

George Washington freshman Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) started at forward and had eight points and four assists in a 66-64 loss to Duquesne on Saturday.

Shipp and her teammates walked the final three blocks to Pittsburgh's Palumbo Center to play the game after the team bus got stuck in the snow. It had snowed 20 inches in the Pittsburgh area.

n

Meredith Brittany Cornelius Cornelius continues to have a stellar senior season.

The No. 3 all-time scorer at Meredith, Cornelius had 20 points and nine rebounds in a 75-66 loss to Mary Baldwin on Saturday.

n

South Carolina State's Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 11 points in a 67-47 loss to Hampton on Saturday.

Hipps was seventh in the MEAC in scoring entering the weekend.

The senior guard has two double-doubles this season. She's led the Bulldogs in assists 10 times, scoring eight times and rebounding on five occasions.

n

Voorhees' Rashonda Mayfield (West Rowan) hit a key 3-pointer to spark a comeback in a recent 66-65 win against Warner. Mayfield had 10 points and four assists.

UNC Asheville's Katie Wise (South Rowan) had two points, two assists and three rebounds in 12 minutes of action in Saturday's 90-87 loss to Charleston Southern.

Men's basketball

Rio Grande junior Doug Campbell (Salisbury) scored a career-high 26 points in a 108-89 loss to West Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Campbell hit seven 3-pointers.

n

Fayetteville State's Jamel Carpenter (West) scored 19 points in a 73-60 loss to St. Augustine's on Saturday.

He's still leading the CIAA in scoring — right at 20 points per game — and also leads the league in free-throw shooting and offensive rebounding.

Carpenter and the Broncos play at Livingstone on Feb. 15, so local fans will have an opportunity to see him play for the first time in three seasons.

n

Coker's Michael Gore (South) had seven points in a 73-63 win against St. Andrews on Wednesday.

Overseas basketball

Bryan McCullough (North) had his best game of the season on Saturday, scoring 18 points for his team in Romania.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
