NEW YORK — Derrio Green scored 24 points to lead Charlotte in a 77-72 win over Fordham on Saturday.
Shamari Spears chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the 49ers (18-5, 8-1 Atlantic 10 Conference), who have won their past seven games. An'Juan Wilderness added 13 points.
With losses by Xavier and Temple, Charlotte is alone in first place.
The 49ers trailed by 10 with 6:59 remaining, but used an 8-0 run to cut the Rams' lead to 59-57 with 5:25 left. A 3-pointer from Green gave Charlotte a 70-68 lead with 2:07 remaining, but Fahro Alihodzic's layup tied the score at 70.
Charlotte would go on to shoot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line to secure the win, and Fordham failed to score a field goal in the final minute.
Freshman Chris Gaston finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high six assists to lead the Rams (2-19, 0-9).
Dayton 90, Xavier 65
DAYTON, Ohio — Chris Johnson started Dayton's opening 17-3 run, and the Flyers led by double-digits the rest of the way in a 90-65 victory that knocked Xavier out of first place in the Atlantic 10.
Dayton (16-6, 5-3) was picked to win the Atlantic 10, but came into the game needing to split its season series with Xavier — the three-time defending champion — to stay in contention. The Flyers had lost eight of their last nine against the Musketeers (16-7, 8-2).
Richmond 71, No. 19 Temple 54
RICHMOND, Va. — Kevin Anderson scored 16 of his 29 points in a blistering first half for Richmond and the Spiders held off No. 19 Temple down the stretch for a 71-54 victory.
Richmond (18-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10) shot 77 percent in the first half against one of the nation's top defensive teams and led by 23 points in the second half.
Temple (19-5, 7-2) lost for just the second time in 10 games and fell into a tie with the Spiders near the top of the conference standings.
App State 89, WCU 77
CULLOWHEE— Donald Sims scored 29 points, leading four Appalachian State players in double figures as the Mountaineers held off Western Carolina 89-77.
Isaac Butts added 14 points while Josh Hunter and Marcus Wright had 10 points apiece for the Mountaineers (13-10, 7-4 Southern Conference). Appalachian State completed a sweep of the season series with Western Carolina, a feat the Mountaineers have accomplished five of the past six seasons.
Brandon Giles and Jake Robinson scored 19 points apiece for Western Carolina (18-6, 8-4).
Davidson 84, Ga. So. 74.
DAVIDSON— J.P. Kuhlman scored a career-high 24 points to lead Davidson to an 84-74 victory over Georgia Southern.
Kuhlman was 10-for-14 from the free throw line and Jake Cohen added 18 points as the Wildcats (12-11, 7-4 Southern Conference) won their fourth straight game.
Brandon McKillop finished with 15 points and Will Archambault added 12 for Davidson.
Elon 66, Furman 55
GREENVILLE, S.C. — TJ Douglas scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Elon defeated Furman 66-55.
Drew Spradlin added 14 points and Chris Long had 11 for the Phoenix (5-17, 3-8 Southern Conference), who snapped a two-game losing streak. The team had lost 11 of its previous 12 games.
Wofford 77, UNC-G 59
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Kevin Giltner scored 14 points to lead Wofford in a 77-59 win over UNC-Greensboro.
Gardner-Webb 82, Charleston Southern 73
CHARLESTON, S.C. — C.J. Hailey scored a career-high 30 points and Gardner-Webb defeated Charleston Southern 82-73.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-16, 4-9 Big South Conference) shot 65 percent from the field (26 of 40) to snap a four-game losing streak.
Marshall 100, ECU 49
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Tirrell Baines scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half as Marshall routed East Carolina 100-49 to end a five-game skid.
Darrius Morrow and Brock Young scored 11 each for the Pirates (7-16, 1-8).
Connecticut 64, DePaul 57
STORRS, Conn. — Jerome Dyson scored 20 points and Connecticut snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating DePaul 64-57. Stanley Robinson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (14-9, 4-6 Big East).
WSSU 62, Howard 58
WINSTON-SALEM — Shelton Carter scored 15 points, including two late free throws, to propel Winston-Salem to a 62-58 win over Howard.
Paul Davis scored 14 to lead the Rams (9-12, 8-2 MEAC).
