area sports briefs: Catawba loses hoops DH

Catawba’s men’s basketball team was pounded 98-71 at strong Lincoln Memorial on Saturday night.

The ninth-ranked Railsplitters (20-2, 10-2) limited Catawba to 25-percent shooting in the first half and opened up a 49-27 lead at the break.

Lincoln Memorial led by as many as 31 points in the second half.

Keon Moore scored 24 for the Indians (5-15, 2-10). Stuart Thomson added a dozen points, and freshman Conor Strickland had five assists.

Vincent Bailey scored 20 points for LMU, while Jake Troyli had 15.

n Catawba women

Catawba’s women’s basketball team watched a 19-point lead evaporate and fell 66-63 at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday night.

Catawba (14-6, 9-3 SAC) dropped into a tie for first with Tusculum.

The loss put a damper on what should’ve been a huge night for the Indians. Nisha Long scored her 1,000th career points, Dana Hicks grabbed her 1,000th rebound.

Hicks had 16 points and 16 rebounds and recorded her 50th double-double to break Stephanie McCormick’s school record.

Hicks already has 1,000 points. She’s only the second Indian with 1,000 points and rebounds. The other was McCormick, who played in the early 1990s.

Catawba led 48-29 with 15 minutes to go, but the Railsplitters caught up at 56-all with about five minutes left.

Trailing 64-63 in the final seconds, Catawba couldn’t get the rebound on a missed LM free throw.

n Livingstone women lose

Winston-Salem State beat Livingstone’s women on Saturday despite 26 points and 16 rebounds by Jasmine Murray.

Stella Holloway added 17 points for the Blue Bears on stellar 8-for-10 shooting.

The bad news? Livingstone (7-14, 2-7 CIAA) turned it over 21 times and shot just 3-for-18 on 3-pointers.

Courtney Medley and Jasmine Newkirk combined for 41 points for the Rams (13-6, 8-2), who led 37-34 at halftime.

n Pfeiffer women

Brittany Cox scored 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team demolished Converse 90-64 in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday.

n Prep track

Former Salisbury resident Shemiah Brooks is one of the country’s top prep triple jumpers.

Brooks, who competes for Southwest Guilford in High Point, has signed with Clemson.

In the JDL Fast Track Last Chance Meet held in Winston-Salem, she won the long jump (18 feet, 53/4 inches) and the triple jump (39-51/2).

Brook’s PR in the triple is 40-41/2.

n A.L. Brown’s Samara Tisdale (shot put), Talvanisha Lawing (55 hurdles) and Timmy Hall (500 meters) are individual qualifiers for the state meet. Hall, Max Chandler, Johnny Hodge and Jose Navarette qualified in the 4x800 relay.

n Prep swimming

NPC and SPC swimmers competed in the 3A West Regional meet in Huntersville on Friday.

The top 12 finishers in each event qualified for the state meet to be held in Cary on Feb. 9.

n East Rowan’s Luke Evans qualified for the state meet in two events. He was 10th in the 100 back (59.78) and also 10th in the 50 free (23.41).

East’s boys qualified for state competition in the 200 free relay. The Mustangs placed ninth (1:39.33).

East’s girls qualified in the 200 free relay with a 10th-place finish (1:51.23).

East’s boys finished 18th overall, while the girls were 20th.

n South Rowan’s Leslie Franks was an individual qualifier. She tied for 11th (26.38 seconds) in the 50 freestyle. South’s Nicole Mauldin just missed. She was 13th.

Franks and Mauldin were 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 100 free.

South’s girls qualified for state competition in the 200 free relay (1:50.06) with a seventh-place finish.

South’s girls finished 12th overall. South’s boys finished 24th in the regional.

Caleb Helms was 14th in the 50 free (23.81 to pace South’s boys.

n A.L. Brown’s Davied Sanchez won the 100 back (53.00), and teammate Cole Harris placed fifth (56.75).

Harris also was a state qualifier with a seventh-place effort (2:05.29) in the 200 IM.

Brown’s 200 medley relay team placed third (1:46.67), while the 200 free relay team was fourth (1:33.14).

A.L. Brown’s boys finished eighth overall.

n Prep wrestling

Davie’s wrestling team scored 213 points and won Saturday’s CPC tournament.

West Forsyth (207) and North Davidson (130) were the teams that challenged the War Eagles.

Davie tournament champs included Lake Billings, Trevor Albarran, Ryan Smith, Trevon Faulkner and Alex Gobble.

Davie runners-up included Logan Cartner, Gerald Whitaker, T.J. Freidt, Cameron Beck and Mick Spillman.

n Salisbury finished in second place in the CCC with a 4-1 record and will be in action on Tuesday when the first two rounds of the 2A dual team state playoffs are contested.

Salisbury will open against the Rocky River champ. The site will be announced.

n Prep hoops

Amy Steller and Laura Shelton scored 10 points each for Davie’s girls in Friday’s 52-31 CPC loss to R.J. Reynolds.

Asiah Peterson added seven.

n Jayvee hoops

West Rowan’s jayvee girls topped North Iredell 34-26 on Friday.

Hunter Gibbons led the Falcons with 12 points. Sierra Charles scored nine, and Elizabeth Freeze had six.

n Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls won the CCISAA tournament championship on Saturday at Boyd Gym.

n Sacred Heart beat Hickory Christian 22-9 in the title game. Julia Honeycutt, Anne Metz and Mary Sobataka led the Dolphins.

Sacred Heart defeated Statesville Christian 25-15 in a semifinal. Sobataka and Honeycuttt scored eight each.

Honeycutt was named MVP for the tournament. Sacred Heart was 10-0 in conference play.

n Catawba softball

Catawba’s softball team opened Saturday with a 7-4, 8-0 sweep at Georgia Southwestern. Amanda Terry had a three-run triple and a homer.

n Rowan Little League

Rowan Little League baseball and softball registration continues through Feb. 18 at Godley’s Garden Center. Parents also can register online anytime at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com
