College roundup: Maryland beats FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Greivis Vasquez scored 23 points as Maryland overcame a late rally to beat Florida State 71-67 on Thursday night.

Maryland (15-6, 5-2 ACC) led by as many as nine points in the second half, but FSU (16-5, 4-4) tied the game twice in the final three minutes and had the ball with 38 seconds left, trailing 66-64.

Freshman Michael Snaer drove to the hoop and made a runner but was called for charging with 14.5 seconds left.

Junior guard Derwin Kitchen scored a career-high 29 points for FSU.

The Terrapins were effective in blanketing center Solomon Alabi. The sophomore, who had 17 points in the first meeting, made just one of his first seven shots. He scored 12 points but shot just 4-for-15.

Vasquez added seven assists and seven rebounds for Maryland, while Landon Milbourne scored 18 points.No. 8 Purdue 78, Indiana 75

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson each scored 21 points, and Purdue (19-3, 7-3 Big Ten) won in Bloomington for the first time since 1999 to snap an eight-game road skid against the Hoosiers (9-12, 3-6).Indiana's Verdell Jones III missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer that could have forced overtime.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Wayne Chism scored 20 points and Tennessee (17-4, 5-2) kept LSU (9-13, 0-8) winless in league play.

INDIANAPOLIS — Gordon Hayward had 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading Butler (19-4, 12-0 Horizon) to its 11th straight win.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Erving Walker scored 14 points in the second half, including a jumper with 11 seconds left.

CULLOWHEE — Brandon Giles scored 19 points, 16 of them in the first half, for Western Carolina (18-5, 8-3 SoCon).

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Kendall Toney scored 17 points and Ben Stywall had 12 points with 13 rebounds for North Carolina-Greensboro (6-16, 4-7 SoCon).

CHARLESTON, S.C. — John Williams led UNC-Asheville (10-13, 7-5 Big South) with nine points and eight rebounds.

J.P. Primm added eight points and eight assists.

Campbell 65, Stetson 47

DELAND, Fla. — Jonathan Rodriguez scored 24 points and Miles Taylor had a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) to lead Campbell (13-9, 8-5 Atlantic Sun).
