College basketball update ...

Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) enjoyed a career game on Saturday as he led the Tornados to a stunning 83-74 SAC win at Anderson.

Moose scored an efficient 31 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field and 10-for-12 at the foul line. The sophomore hit three 3-pointers and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

You never know. Anderson came in unbeaten in the league, while Brevard had won just one SAC contest.

n Charlotte’s K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) had four points and two rebounds in the 49ers’ 74-70 loss to Xavier on Saturday.

nKaleb Kimber (West) hit two 3-pointers for Rio Grande in Saturday’s 73-65 win against West Virginia Tech.

nAlex Weant (Salisbury) contributed two rebounds as Roanoke edged Eastern Mennonite 81-79 on Saturday.

Coaches always ask players to be ready when their number is called, and Brevard’s Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) was mentally prepared when she finally got a chance.

Poole hasn’t played a lot this season — or in her college career, for that matter — but she got 25 minutes on the court Saturday in a 73-64 loss to Anderson. Poole responded with five 3-pointers and scored a career-best 17 points. She also had three steals.

n Shaw’s Shemieka Brown (North Rowan) scored 10 points in 15 minutes in Saturday’s 101-72 romp against Livingstone.

nDaQuondra Cuthbertson (North) started for Fayetteville State on Saturday and had eight points and six rebounds in an 80-55 loss against J.C. Smith.

n Three Rowan girls were on the floor in a Division I game on Saturday when Radford played Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs. Radford won 63-50.

Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) had six rebounds and three assists for the winning Highlanders, while Ayana Avery (West) had seven points and two steals.

For the Bulldogs, Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had seven points and six steals.

nAyanna Holmes (Salisbury) scored eight points for Charlotte on Sunday in a 65-55 loss to Temple. The game was televised by CBS Sports Network.
