Antonio Houston hit a season-high 31 points to lead the 23rd-ranked Catawba's men's basketball team to a 97-90 win at Wingate on Wednesday.Catawba (10-3, 2-0 SAC) also got double-figure scoring from Cliff Burns (17), Rob Fields (16) and Isaac Rose (11). Finnur Magnusson added seven points and six rebounds.

Tommy Coles scored 27 points for Wingate (5-9, 1-2) and was 11-for-13 from the floor. Kenny Villines had 17 points and 10 rebounds. DeMario Mattox had 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Catawba led 42-35 at halftime, thanks to 16 first-half points from Houston.

Wingate cut the lead to 60-58 at the 11:06 mark, but Catawba did not relinquish the advantage in the second half. A Houston jumper made the score 85-75 Catawba with 3:22 to play in the contest.

n Catawba women rally

Catawba's women's basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and claimed a 76-67 victory over Wingate on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena.

Catawba (9-4, 1-1 SAC) won its fifth straight and ended Wingate's 24-game winning streak at Cuddy.

The Long twins, Nisha and Kisha, combined for 27 points for the Indians. Brittany Higgins had 11 points, Dana Hicks had 16 rebounds, and Cameron Clark and Kisha Long had five assists apiece.

Anna Atkinson led Wingate (10-4, 1-2) with 15 points and 10 assists.

Catawba shot 28 percent in the first half but kept Wingate in sight by forcing 16 turnovers.

Catawba shot 55 percent in the second half.

n Salisbury jayvee hoops

The Salisbury girls remained undefeated with a 52-33 win over West Davidson on Tuesday.

Doreen Richardson scored 26 points to lead the Hornets (9-0, 4-0). Najwa Allison and Ayana Hicks each scored eight.

Salisbury's jayvee boys beat West Davidson 62-31. Dejoun Jones scored 17 and Forrest Wilkins 12 for the Hornets (6-2, 2-2).

n Homeschool hoops

The Cabarrus-Rowan Stallions basketball teams won a varsity doubleheader against Pineville on Tuesday.

The girls improved to 7-3 with a 57-38 win. Hannah Holm had 31 points, while Becca Bare scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Stallion boys won 68-21. K.P. Hicks scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds for the Stallions (6-6). Christian Hicks scored nine and Tim Coleman eight.

n College women's hoops

Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) scored seven points for Meredith in a 57-42 loss against N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday.

n Men's college hoops

Doug Campbell (Salisbury) had three assists for Rio Grande in a 91-71 win against Point Park Tuesday.

n Gragg retires

Floyd Gragg, one of the area's longest-serving golf professionals, retired Jan. 1 from his position as director of golf at Rocky River Golf Club. Gragg's career spanned 45 years.
