Catawba's women's basketball team rolled to a 93-65 non-conference win over Belmont Abbey at Goodman Gym on Saturday.

Catawba (8-4) won its fourth straight by breaking open a close game early in the second half. The Indians led only 41-38 at halftime.

Brittany Higgins and Dana Hicks led the Indians with 15 points each. Cameron Clark had 14 and Brooke Whitley 10. Nisha Long, Sara Crane and Pamela Muldrow added nine apiece.

Catawba enjoyed 52.2-percent shooting from the field and held the Crusaders (4-3) to 27 points in the second half.

Whitley's early 3-pointer gave Catawba a 7-6 lead, and the Indians never lost it.Amanda McDonald led Belmont Abbey with 14 points.

Catawba plays at Wingate in SAC action on Wednesday.

n Pfeiffer men outscored

Pfeiffer's men's basketball team shot 50 percent but lost at Bluefield 119-104 on Saturday afternoon.

Bluefield (10-4) shot 17-for-32 on 3-pointers and 56.5 percent from the floor.

Chris Woods led the Falcons (4-4) with 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting. Robert McGriff had 20 points and eight boards. Jeff Pettiway (18), James Crowder (12) and Trumaine Johnson (11) also scored in double figures for the Falcons.

Coryon Ross was 6-for-7 on 3s and scored 33 points for Bluefield. Curtis Dixon had 28 points, while Omar Reed produced 13 points and a game-high 12 boards.

The teams will meet again tonight at Pfeiffer's Merner Gym at 7 p.m.

At 1-0 in the league, idle Catawba stands alone in first place after a wild day in the SAC on Saturday.

Seven SAC teams are now 1-1.

Josh Rudder scored 25 points to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 77-60 victory over Tusculum in Greeneville, Tenn.

L-R had an 18-1 run in the second half.

Freshman Jon Hathcock (NW Cabarrus) hit a 3-pointer and scored five points for the Bears.

Kyle Moore led the Pioneers with 26 points.

n Newberry won on its home floor, beating Carson-Newman 89-73.

Clemente Martin led Newberry with 24 points.

n Jonathan Whitson had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Brevard to a 90-80 victory against Mars Hill in Brevard.

n Wadner Joseph hit two free throws with nine seconds left to lift Lincoln Memorial to a 59-58 victory against Wingate in Harrogate, Tenn.

n CIAA star recognized

Elizabeth City State All-America guard Anthony Hilliard was featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of the Dec. 29 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Hilliard was recognized for scoring 33 points and getting 12 rebounds in an MVP performance against Morehouse in the Fresh Coast Classic in Milwaukee.

Hilliard is the reigning CIAA Player of the Year.

n Colllege women's hoops

Pfeiffer lost to St. Augustine's 88-86 at Merner Gym on Saturday.

Shanee Purnell led Pfeiffer (0-7) with 21 points. Keyona Bryant scored 22 for St. Augustine's.

n Sisters Brittany Roberson and Renee« Roberson (West Rowan) scored six points each for Lees-McRae in a 66-62 victory against St. Andrews in Laurinburg on Saturday.

Brittany, a senior, had four steals and two blocks.

n Fayetteville State's Saybah Sammy (Salisbury) had four rebounds and four steals in a 99-49 romp over Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday.

n In SAC action, Tusculum beat Lenoir-Rhyne 79-72 Saturday in a battle of streaking teams. Newberry topped Carson's Newman 69-61. Wingate edged Lincoln Memorial 73-72.

Tusculum and Newberry are 2-0 in league play.

n Carson boys lose

Carson's boys basketball team hung tough for a half but lost 89-50 at unbeaten league-leader Lake Norman on Friday night.

Carson (6-7, 2-5 NPC) trailed 18-15 after one quarter and 37-29 at the break. Lake Norman (11-0, 6-0) outscored the Cougars by a 28-7 margin in the third quarter and 24-14 in the fourth.

Darius Moose led Carson with 16 points, and point guard Brandon Ferrare added 12. Cody Clanton had seven.

Moose, a junior, boosted his career total to 963 points.

Matt Eller scored 19 points for the Wildcats.

n Carson girls lose on road

Carson's girls didn't score in the first half of a 53-21 loss at Lake Norman.

The Cougars (1-11, 0-7 NPC) were behind 11-0 after one quarter and 23-0 at the break.

Lake Norman (9-3, 6-1) led 40-8 entering the fourth, and Carson played even with the Wildcats in the final period.

Jazzmin Brown led Carson with four points.

Lisa Shalvey had 14 points for the Wildcats, who stayed tied for second in the NPC with East Rowan.

n NWC girls prevail

Northwest Cabarrus' girls won 65-63 at North Iredell in a mild NPC upset Friday.

Taylor Allen led the Trojans with 22 points, and Imani Williams scored 14.

n West boosters

The West Rowan High School Booster Club will meet on Jan. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the school media center. An alternate location will be the school cafeteria.
