NASCAR: Busch leads Driver of the year balloting
E-mail to a friendAssociated Press Kyle Busch crushed the competition on the track and in the ballots as the first quarter winner in the 2008 Driver of the Year balloting. The 23-year-old won a total seven races in NASCAR's top-three series — Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Trucks — the quarter that ended before his most recent victory last Saturday night at Darlington. Despite his fast start to the season, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver was surprised by the honor. "Completely unexpected," he said. "We've just been going out and driving as hard as we can every week and really having a lot of fun doing it. We go out and race for wins and race for trophies, but to also get this kind of recognition for what we've been doing is pretty special." The award is voted on by a national panel of motorsports writers and broadcasters and Busch was listed first on 14 of the 17 ballots. He was no lower than third on the others and had a total of 142 points. Fellow NASCAR star Carl Edwards was second with one first-place vote and 72 points, while Danica Patrick, who drives for Andretti Green Racing in the IRL IndyCar Series, had two first-place votes and 51 points after becoming the first woman to win an IndyCar race. Ashley Force, daughter of 1996 Driver of the Year John Force, was fourth in the voting with 49 points. Comments (5)What do you think? Post your comment below. Comments (5)

Mary : Thursday, May 15, 2008 5:10 PMKyle Bush shouldn only be voted the most daring driver! I can't stand him, and only wish the worst for him! I think he is a first class jerk, and as someone said he is cocky and full of himself!!!

Every : Thursday, May 15, 2008 12:28 PMEvery successful driver or athlete relies on luck. If you can't see the talent in Busch then you're not looking, because it's plain as day. I don't like him, don't pull for him and wish he would get humbled by other drivers and NASCAR, but he's got talent.

Look a little deeper. : Thursday, May 15, 2008 9:31 AMGreg Biffle would have won that race in Darlington not Kyle. His car was faster his only problem was mechanical not driver. Kyle is not the greatest just some dumb luck like the gas win with Jimmie Johnson.

: Thursday, May 15, 2008 9:21 AMGive me a break. He's the most reckless, irresponsible, cockey driver they have and he's going to get someone killed or badly hurt. I use to be his fan and with the latest comments coming from his lips I dropped him. He needs to learn when to zip it.

Hard to argue : Thursday, May 15, 2008 8:27 AMWhile being one of the most immature drivers on the circuit, you can't argue that he's one of the most talented. Though I can't stand him as a person or driver, he makes a very strong case for driver of the year.
