The students, equipped with classroom knowledge about the economy and business operations, became citizens for the day at JA BizTown, students operating a realty office, distribution center and pet shop.
Students became business CEOs, CFOs, veterinary assistants, real estate appraisers, delivery personnel and much more.
Each year, Salisbury Academy's fifth-grade students take JA BizTown as an exploratory course during the spring. Salisbury Academy is the only school in the county to be a part of this unique experience. Salisbury Academy considers itself to be very fortunate to have its students participate in this learning experience.
Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization that educates students about the workforce, economy and entrepreneurship. It is designed to prepare students for the real world.
The JA BizTown curriculum is a hands-on curriculum that provides students with the knowledge of daily activities of the real world. Students learn how to operate businesses, write checks and balance checkbooks and secure business loans. Students also learn the importance of becoming philanthropists in their community.
Diane Fisher, head of school, is quoted as saying, "The lessons students learn through JA's BizTown are very much aligned with Salisbury Academy's educational philosophy and instructional style. The students enjoy learning this way."
As one student stated, "I never knew working could be so much fun!"
