On April 27, the first- and fifth-graders of Salisbury Academy participated in centers together. These centers were a part of the first-graders' recent study of MesoAmerica, which includes the ancient civilizations of the Mayans, Incas and Aztec.

The fifth-graders, who studied this topic in the fall, created three centers for the first graders: the Mayan pyramids, the Aztec masks, and the Incan llamas. With the assistance of the fifth-graders, the first- graders built Mayan pyramids out of Legos and created Aztec masks.

Mayan pyramids were often the location of Mayan religious ceremonies and celebrations and the Aztecs used colorful masks in their celebrations. The Incas domesticated the llama and used it to transport items, often up to 100 pounds.

The children experienced how much the llamas carried by lifting and walking with some potatoes. Together, the first- and fifth-graders also read "Your Momma is a Llama" and "llama llama red pajama."
