Cook column: Dole legacy is not complete yet

Has U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole lost touch with the the people of North Carolina?

It didn't appear that way on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday this past January. When she attended a huge breakfast at the Salisbury Civic Center, people nearly mobbed the senator as they shared a few words or posed for photos with her. The short interview she had scheduled with the Post had to be really short so she could rush back to Washington and debate stimulus packages. She commented briefly on the economy, illegal immigration, the war in Iraq — and was off.

So just 10 months ago, Dole still had the glow of a bright star who worked for Reagan and Bush I, headed the Red Cross, wowed a Republican Convention and once made a run for the White House herself.

But the same people who were glad-handing her at the King breakfast probably did not shed tears for Dole when she lost her re-election bid last week. And the crowd watching results come in at the Board of Elections Tuesday night seemed neither surprised nor saddened as they learned that, though Dole carried her home county easily, voters in the rest of the state gave her a resounding defeat, giving her only 44 percent of the vote.

Dole got a taste of what U.S. Rep. Earl Ruth of Salisbury felt in 1974, when voters reacted to Watergate and President Nixon's resignation by ousting virtually every Republican in the land. Enter Democrat Bill Hefner, who held on to the 8th District seat for a quarter of a century.

People scoffed when Hillary Clinton announced her run eight years ago to be one of New York's U.S. senators. A native of Illinois, she had spent her adult life in Arkansas and the White House. How could she claim to represent New York?

But Clinton took on more than a New York label. She established a residence, embraced her new home state and became one of its fiercest advocates.

Dole grew up in Salisbury but has lived in the Washington area virtually all her career, visiting Salisbury occasionally to see her mother. (Mary Hanford died in 2004 at the age of 102.) When Dole ran for Jesse Helms' Senate seat, though, it was possible to see how she could claim Salisbury as her home again and represent North Carolina.

Opponents complained in 2002 that Dole didn't actually live here, but voters were willing to overlook that. After all, few mentioned how seldom Bill Hefner spent the night at his Concord condo while serving in Congress. For most of his time in Washington, Hefner lived in McLean, Va., next door to TV newsman Roger Mudd and his family.

But members of the House serve only two-year terms, so Hefner had little time between being elected and having to run for re-election again. He came around fairly often and sponsored rallies that drew hundreds. People would travel far to have the former gospel singer cheer them up with "I'll Fly Away" and put in a political plug for himself.

As Hefner became entrenched in Washington — "established," his supporters might say — his suits grew more elegant and the rallies shrank, but Hefner stayed in touch. Most memorably, he kept federal dollars flowing into the expansion of the veterans hospital in Salisbury. Hence its relatively new name, the W.G. "Bill" Hefner V.A. Medical Center.

Maybe some of the barracks at Fort Bragg will bear Dole's name.

As a senator with a six-year term, Dole didn't have to woo constituents every 24 months. But she went to work on issues that should have won her support beyond the Piedmont — the tobacco buyout, for example, and the status of the Lumbee Indians.

According to the Triangle Business Journal, Dole and Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., brought home some $744 million in earmarks last year for construction projects at Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg. Aside from that, the paper reported, "Dole is the state's leading rainmaker," pulling in about $70 million for other North Carolina projects in that year.

Here in Rowan County, we puzzle over how Alaska was able to get $223 million for "bridge to nowhere" when North Carolina can't get funds for a bridge to a crucial somewhere — from the Rowan County side of the Yadkin River to the Davidson side on busy I-85. Dole says the structure of North Carolina transportation funding stood in her way.

Dole achieved a level of infamy this year she did not anticipate by airing a commercial that gave the impression her opponent is atheist — a step over the line between politics as usual and really dirty politics.

Her predecessor Jesse Helms might have applauded; over-the-edge political ads were his fortŽ. But you didn't hear many "atta-girls" coming from N.C. voters. The commercial looked like an act of desperation, and it was embarrassing to watch Dole defend the kernel of truth within it. On Newsweek's dignity index last week, Dole scored a 68 on a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 being merely tacky and 100 being utterly shameless. One person here observed that our Southern lady had burned down Tara.

Dole is wise to push toward a new phase in her public service career rather than retirement. At 72, she's no more ready to relax than John McCain. Besides, voters might never forgive and forget the "Godless Americans" ad, but new accomplishments could leave fresher, better memories.

Bye Bye Liddy!!
Wake up...Dole's done : Sunday, November 16, 2008 7:17 PM

DIP, If you're going to use big words like "pontificate," at least learn how to spell "Hagan" and "merely." You also proceed to attack Mrs. Cook for being critical of Dole when her article is anything but critical. In fact, Mrs. Cook is very generous to Dole in claiming she was a public servant and Obama's support and Dole's ads were sources of her downfall. The reality of it is is that Dole was overconfident and her lack of being in NC for 40 years showed in her national GOP agenda. Her concession speech was also anything but graceful, as even the state and national media picked up on how condescending it was. I will have to disagree with Ms. Cook, however, and say that I believe Dole's career is most certainly over. These past six years have seen her go from a lively elderly lady to a botox-filled grandmom who can barely get up out of her seat or walk down front-porch steps. I wish her the best, but good riddance. NC wants someone who will care about her interests, and not Bush's.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. It is just a different face in the mirror.!

I would think that you, Liddy and Hagan all worship the same God. If not, then read Judges 10:14, and ponder to whom you will pray henceforth.

DIP, you are right on!! : Sunday, November 09, 2008 8:45 PM

A quality person who takes her religion seriously would not want to be associated with the godless American group and would not take their money. Barack is in over his head. He can expect little real help from Hagan. She will faithfully (and blindly) vote for his socialist agenda, but expect no creative ideas from her. She is a follower and never a leader. In the NC Senate, she supported the tax and spend socialist agenda of the corrupt NC Democrats.

We need a real leader, not Kay Hagan : Sunday, November 09, 2008 8:38 PM

Kay Hagan will be getting plastic surgery soon to remove the dark brown stain on her nose. Hardly a leader in the NC Senate, she faithfully served Basnight and Rand as their gofer and never crossed them in a vote. She will likely do the same with Harry Reid. On second thought, Kay, why get the plastic surgery for the brown nose only to do the same thing with Harry Reid? Why not wait until we throw you out in the next election? Maybe in 6 years we will elect a real leader, instead of a lackey who always plays follow-the-leader.

Time for the media to look in the mirror : Sunday, November 09, 2008 6:14 PM

Which candidate started all the negativity in the first place? It wasn't Dole! Sure the ad backfired with LOTS of help from the media. The national and state media had two very separate and distinct agendas in this election; one set of rules for the D's and another for the R's. Do you really think there would have been the same reaction if Dole had gone out of state to the home of some right wing lunatic for a fundraiser? No msm questions for Hagen for flying up to Boston and ducking in through the side door of the God-less Am home nor any questions to Obama for holding an event at the home of the guy who bombed the Pentagon. Just off limits, as far as most of the media was concerned and in both cases shoot the messenger mentality. Unfortunately for Dole she had and R after her name and was damned if she did and damned if she didn't.

You are defending your own lie!!!! : Sunday, November 09, 2008 12:06 PM

No matter how much Ms. Cook pontificates and crows about her condemnation of Sen. Dole, it remains that the ad that angered the Liberal Dems so much merely pointed out that 1) Kay Hagen took a lot of out-of-state money from liberals who had early on targeted her Senate seat; 2) Kay Hagen went to the home of one of the leaders of GODLESS AMERICANS and took money from that group and was not even brave enough to go in the front door and then claimed that she did not know that the group was a bunch of atheists. Further, Hagen then crowed about being a Sunday School teacher. That being true, why did she even consider going to Boston, MA to covort with such folks? Ms. Cook does not go into that in her broad swipe at Sen. Dole. Does she feel guilty now, or is she meerly gloating over the defeat of Sen. Dole? I would even ask why Ms. Cook comes to the defense of a group known as GODLESS AMERICANS................is the editorial staff of the Salisbury Post hoping, perhaps, that a similar group will spring up here in Rowan County? Sen. Dole and her husband have accepted defeat with dignity and I would suggest that the Salisbury Post Editorial Staff treat their triumph in the same manner. They have achieved their primary purpose of giving Barak HUSSEIN Obama another arrow in his oversized quiver to plant a socialistic government here in the US. I must admit that Kay Hagen does not appear to be all that sharp of an arrow, but she is now one of your NC senators for the next 6 years. May GOD HAVE MERCY UPON US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dole's Legacy not Complete? : Sunday, November 09, 2008 9:12 AM

Au contraire, Ms. Cook. Dole's legacy is done. She can go back HOME to Washington. Or Kansas. But you won't see her slither back to Salisbury. She's as 'done' as a Thanksgiving turkey. And 'turkey' is a pretty good analogy.

Moving on
Liddy Dole : Sunday, November 09, 2008 4:33 AM

It is now time to move on and stop beating up on Liddy Dole. We (voters)had a choice and we made it so allow her to rest in peace. Let everyone remember that we are all tired of dirty politics and we will retaliate with our vote. Frankly, that negative ad was beneath Liddy but what swayed my vote was the two old geezers in the commercial. The people have spoken!
