How will we supply N.C. water needs?Are widespread water shortages next? Lake Mead and Lake Powell were full for years but now are down about 100 feet. A 2002 federal report found 30 states experiencing water shortages; today it has jumped to more than 40. Where is the water for drinking, farming etc. going to come from?

Water is fed by pipelines or culverts in Nevada and California. At this rate of use, by 2025, the water will be gone.

Drought is starting in the Southeast. If water can be diverted to other states like California, why can't we do the same by directing water from the Mississippi and others flood-prone rivers in the Midwest to lakes and reservoirs in other areas? It would be expensive, yes, but some of the money could come from politicians if they would stop spending millions on elections, trips etc.

We also should restrict lakes from releasing water for white-water rafting.

Millions of gallons of wastewater could be turned into clean water by using purification technologies such as reverse osmosis. Yes, it's expensive, but the world population is growing by millions each year, and those people must have water.

We also create global warming by cutting down trees, covering grass with asphalt, building more unneeded malls that reflect the heat. And for what? To make money for greedy people who do not care.

Our bad living habits must change. Stop living like the "me" generation and start acting like the "we" generation. Show a little kindness and it will come back two-fold.

Editor's note: The following letter refers to an article about Barry Hulon Hyde, "Starting over: Pilot's life takes turn after crash," that was published in the Post on Nov. 12, 2000.

I decided to look up "Starting over for 40-something women" on Google this morning ... here in Adelaide, South Australia.

I've been struggling with various things for a while now and was hoping to find something to encourage me.

The Salisbury Post entry was the first one that remotely interested me and caught my eye, and I am so glad.

Please pass on my message of thanks and appreciation to Barry and his Mum for their story.

I think God is speaking to me and I am about to go and find Romans 6 in the Bible.
