Educational day at the market
Wednesday morning the third-grade class from North Hills Christian School went to the Salisbury Farmers Market to meet the farmers, bakers and plant providers who have booths at the market.
The students learned about selecting fresh vegetables, healthy plants and purchasing by the bunch, by the pound or by item. This educational experience was supported by Coooperative Extension's Master Gardeners Katherine Jones and I. We know the children learned a good deal. Katherine and I want to thank the patrons of the market for their patience with the extra crowd the young people created.
An even greater thank you goes to the vendors for their generosity with their vegetables, plants, baked goods and time to help these young people in their journey to adulthood.

Gluten-free food
I enjoyed the May 26 article "Going gluten free" since I have dealt with this allergy for the last three years. In addition to the stores mentioned in the article, I'd like to point out a Salisbury store that offers gluten-free products. In this economy, I feel it is important to patronize local businesses such as Simply Good Foods on East Innes Street.
When first diagnosed, I researched and made trips to out-of-town larger chain health food stores to see what was available. Then I went to Simply Good Foods and met Steve, the owner. He is able to keep in stock a good variety of gluten-free foods and products. It saves me in time and mileage, with the added bonus of friendly, helpful service.
