RCCC classes help with employment

The Human Resources Development (HRD) Program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will offer multiple, short-term computer, business communications, healthcare customer service and financial awareness classes between January and April 2012.

Class fees are $65 and up; individuals who are unemployed may qualify for a tuition waiver. Classes are offered at multiple sites, including the college’s North Campus, Goodwill Industries and Career Connections in Salisbury, the South Campus and Cabarrus Business & Technology Center in Concord, and the Cloverleaf Plaza in Kannapolis.

Introduction to Computers — classes every month, January through April. Learn the basic computer skills that help you get and keep a job. You will receive instruction in:

• Hardware, software and operating systems.

• Basic functions of Microsoft Windows.

• Email attachments.

• Internet-assisted job search.

• Internet assisted career exploration.

• Resume and cover letter preparation.

• Creation of file folders for organized record-keeping.

Computer Empowerment — classes, January-April; learn to use various software applications to help you with your job search. You will receive introductory instruction in:

• Word processing to create employment-related documents.

• Spreadsheet manipulation to track expenses.

• Presentation programs to create an electronic portfolio.

• Internet assisted job search.

• Internet assisted job applications.

Computer Applications — classes January-April; use newly acquired computer skills to complete employment related projects including:

• Creating electronic documents that get interviews.

• Tracking prospective employer information.

• Recording personal job search data using a spreadsheet.

• Creating a visual showcase of your skills

• Performing advanced level job searches via the Internet.

• Completing online applications.

Business Communications — classes January-April; improve written and oral communication skills in a professional business environment. You will receive instruction to:

• Improve your writing skills.

• Create a business letter, fax and memo.

• Create a resume, cover letter and reference page.

• Polish your grammar.

• Build confidence in professional networking and presenting yourself to an employer.

• Advance business etiquette skills.

Healthcare Customer Service — classes in January and March; explore the role of an administrative healthcare worker to help you understand the healthcare industry market. You will receive instruction to:

• Discover ways to provide positive patient service.

• Learn to schedule appointments.

• Gain knowledge of medical documentation.

• Organize medical records.

• Become certified in HIPAA regulations.

• Practice telephone etiquette.

• Become familiar with various medical terms.

Employment Lab — classes beginning in January; pace yourself in this open lab designed with the job-seeker in mind. Assess your own goals and develop a career or educational plan, which may include:

• Career Readiness Certification.

• Keyboarding practice.

• Help with a job search.

• Help with interviews.

• Resume and cover letter assistance.

• Career exploration.

• Assistance in signing up for an HRD course.

Financial Awareness — classes month, January-April; in just one day, you can create a plan to put yourself back on the road to financial security. You will receive instruction to help you:

• Create and stick to a simple budget.

• Eliminate debt.

• Set financial goals.

• Find bargains and save money.

• Create a wage improvement plan.

• Use credit wisely.

• Protect your identity.

• Understand workplace financial concepts.

Work Certified – Work Readiness Certification – classes January-April; increase your chances for employment and promotion by obtaining a Work Certified credential. You will receive instruction to prove to potential and existing employers that you have what it takes to help grow a business, including:

• Superior customer service skills.

• Exceptional work habits.

• Strong problem-solving skills.

• Excellent problem-solving skills.

• A quality understanding of business commerce.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The HRD Program at Rowan-Cabarrus provides short-term, pre-employment training and counseling designed for unemployed and under-employed adults. HRD offers a variety of classes designed to assist adult learners conduct job searches, build skills needed for employment, explore career options, and learn basic computer skills, including those needed for computerized job searches.
