City: Fibrant matches TW download speed

A city official says Fibrant matches Time Warner Cable’s new download speed.

The cable giant announced this week improved download speeds of up to 50 megabits per second, twice as fast as Fibrant’s top advertised speed.

But Assistant City Manager Doug Paris told the Post today that Fibrant, the city’s new fiber optic utility, has always offered a 50 Mbps download speed.

“We just haven’t advertised it,” Paris said.

Time Warner’s fastest upload speed is 5 Mbps, which is 10 times slower than Fibrant’s unadvertised upload speed of 50 Mbps. Fibrant customers can request the fastest speeds, Paris said.

“We plan to roll out higher speeds over time,” he said.
