Fisher Street lane closures coming as theater project continues

Drivers will find part of Fisher Street off limits in the coming weeks as contractors working on the Fisher Street Theater close lanes for the project.

The eastbound lane of Fisher Street between Main and Lee streets will be closed until the end of October. Starting the second week in November, both lanes of traffic will be closed for two weeks, Salisbury Salisbury City Engineer Dan Mikkelson said during Tuesday's City Council Meeting.

Items that were also addressed during the meeting:

- The council recognized Rowan Regional Medical Center for its diversity efforts in the month of October.

"Our community is becoming more diverse every day," said Mayor Kluttz. "It is important we appreciate all that Rowan Regional Medical Center does for our community."

- Jeff Jones, utilities engineer for Salisbury/Rowan, gave a presentation on the Water Shortage Response Plan, and the council approved the plan.

Jones noted that Salisbury receives its water supply from 3,000 square miles of water upstream, and, "as stream flows drop, there is an increase in the level of response," by the city, he said.

- City Manager David Treme presented the council with an update on the first quarter's outcomes and goals. Morris and Mikkelson also presented information to the council regarding the outcomes and goals.

One project highlighted was the "Impact Project," which connected sidewalks from Main Street to the City Park. Morris said the initial project was 90 percent complete.

- The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department will host a park planning meeting for the new 3.6 acre neighborhood park on North McCoy Road. The meeting will be held Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Milford Hills United Methodist Church.

- On Oct. 31, the Fulton Heights neighborhood will host a Halloween parade, which will close the 200 block of Mitchell Ave. from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

- The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department and Downtown Salisbury, Inc., will host Halloween Fun Fest Oct. 31, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the First Bank parking lot.

The next Salisbury City Council meeting will be Nov. 3 at 4 p.m.
