Duke Energy is considering shutting down two coal-fired units at Buck Steam Station by 2015.
The Buck plant is a four-unit coal-fired generating station located on the Yadkin River in Rowan County.
In an annual planning document filed Wednesday with the N.C. Utilities Commission, Duke said it might shut down seven units in North and South Carolina rather than refit them with pollution controls.
The final decision will be driven by government emission-control requirements, company spokesman Jason Walls said.
If the company determines it is not economically feasible to install sulfur-dioxide controls called scrubbers, Duke will retire the units, he said.
Buck also has three natural-gas fueled combustion turbines. Construction is under way on another gas-fired unit at Buck, which is planned to open next year.
