SALISBURY — Warm and muggy conditions didn’t slow competitors in the Parks and Recreation Triathlon held Friday morning at Catawba College.
The event culminated a week of training in swimming, cycling and running for children 8-14 years old. The participants also received tips on nutrition, rest, hydration and proper preparation for the event, as well as tips on how to transition from swim to bike to run.
Chance Brown was the overall winner in 18 minutes and 48 seconds after swimming 150 yards in the pool, cycling 1[0xbd] miles, and running 1 mile. Nicole Fleming was the first female with a time of 27:20. Each finisher got a medal and shirt to commemorate the event.
The entire youth triathlon camp and competition were held on the Catawba College campus and surrounding streets. Catawba staff helped prepare the course and provided assistance during the week of camp. The Salisbury Police Department kept the course safe. Instructors were Kim Miller, Sarah Noble-Phillips and David Freeze.
