The Salvation Army of Rowan County is gearing up for its annual after-school program, which begins in late August.
“We’ve been doing this for about six or seven years,” said Program Coordinator Jennifer Chambers.
The program starts Wednesday, Aug. 25. But participants can register now, Chambers said.
In fact, the organization wants people to register as soon as possible since space is limited to 20 children.
The program will be held 2:30 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Salvation Army office, 620 Bringle Ferry Road. It’s being offered to children in kindergarten through eighth grade in the following schools: Koontz Elementary, North Rowan Elementary, Knox Middle, Hanford Dole Elementary and Granite Quarry Elementary.
The program staff will pick up students at school and parents must pick them up from the Salvation Army office.
The weekly registration fee is $25 per child for the first three children and $10 per child after that.
“The program can be paid weekly or other payment arrangements can be made,” Chambers sa
id.
During the after-school program, students will receive homework assistance and use of the facility’s computer lab.
There will also be time allotted for play, she said, with stations set up for activities including games, puzzles and books.
Staff will provide students a heavy afternoon snack, Chambers said.
When students are out of school for breaks, Chambers said, parents can send their children for a full day of care from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We will feed them breakfast, lunch and two snacks,” she said.
When there is no school, staff will plan field trips for students.
