Several elected officials and community leaders will gather at a public meeting Thursday to speak out against Alcoa’s relicensing efforts.
Davidson County Commissioner Cathy Dunn will host the meeting at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at her home beside High Rock Lake, 1375 Starboard Reach in Lexington. The event is open to the public.
Alcoa Power Generating Inc. has been working to obtain another 50-year license to operate the hydroelectric dams along the Yadkin River.
At the meeting, a panel of speakers will address the public in opposition of Alcoa’s relicensing and in favor of public ownership of the Yadkin Hydroelectric Project. They then will take time for a question-and-answer session.
State officials attending include Sen. Fletcher Hartsell, Sen. Stan Bingham, Secretary of Commerce Keith Crisco, House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman, Rep. Jerry Dockham, Special Deputy Attorney General Faison Hicks and a staff representative from the office of Gov. Beverly Perdue. Also attending will be Davidson County commissioners, Stanly County commissioners, Yadkin Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks and other elected officials from across the state.
Eszter Vajda and Martin Sansone, who made the documentary about Alcoa shown to the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month, plan to come to the meeting as well.
Dress is casual, and food and refreshments will be served.
