Free enterpriseprogram

Three local students are graduates of the 2010 Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge — Matt Hill, Jesse C. Carson High School; Katelyn Shuping, East Rowan High School; and Lee Fisher, Our Lady of God Remedy Catholic School.

The residential program was held in two sessions (June 20-24, June 27-July 1) on the campus of Wingate University.

More than 200 students from five states and four foreign countries attended. The program is sponsored annually by the Jesse Helms Center Foundation and is offered at a minimal cost to students.

During the program, participants worked in small groups to create or sell a product or service for other members of the camp. Daily speakers provided real life business examples and emphasized the importance of philanthropy.

Students participated in hands-on activities that taught the basics of marketing, free enterprise, economics and principled leadership. Speech and essay contests were held during the week, and cash prizes were given to top performers.

Students chose the fate of their profits, and $1,685 was donated to support entrepreneurs in developing countries through the website Kiva.org.

Students complete science program

Shraddha Patel and Jessica Wilkerson of Salisbury have completed the 2010 Science Enrichment Preparation Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Patel is a student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, majoring in chemistry and pre-pharmacy. Wilkerson is a rising senior at N.C. A&T State University majoring in biology.

Both were among 60 undergraduates who participated in the program for minority, educationally and/or economically disadvantaged students who plan to pursue health science careers. The eight-week program is conducted by the North Carolina Health Careers Access Program, an inter-institutional program of UNCCH.

Participants spent their summer at Carolina studying human anatomy, organic chemistry, physics, quantitative skills/biostatistics, reading comprehension and admission test preparation.

Students went to health professions seminars and toured area health facilities.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
