WOODLEAF — Law enforcement and the owner of Woodleaf BP are seeking help in identifying the man who robbed the store at gunpoint Friday morning.

According to a report from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, a man entered the store shortly before 10 a.m. Friday asking for a Black and Mild.

The clerk turned around to get the cigar. As she turned back toward the customer, she saw he had a handgun.

The man demanded money. When the clerk opened the cash register, he reached over, grabbed the drawer and pulled it out.

He took the cash and checks that were inside and underneath the drawer.

The robber tried to force the clerk to open the safe, but she could not.

The robber then demanded cartons of Newport cigarettes. After he got the cigarettes, he left.

The clerk didn’t see whether the man left on foot or by vehicle.

The store has released a video of the robbery, hoping that someone will identify the man.

The Sheriff’s Office is working to release an enhanced version.

In an e-mail to the Post, an employee wrote, “Please help catch this man. The Woodleaf BP has had many break-ins, but not like this. Please help catch this man. We are sure that he is a local Hispanic. Someone around here will recognize him.”

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office at 704-616-8700.
