A Cleveland man has been honored for his work promoting the beauty of America’s roadways, communities and landscapes.
Scenic America has given its lifetime achievement award to Charles F. Floyd a resident of Redmon Road.
A former president of Scenic America, Floyd was honored during a meeting in Washington, D.C.
Floyd and his wife, Rebecca Floyd Barber, have spent decades restoring the Barber homeplace and farm.
Charlie was on the forefront of the fight against billboard blight before most of us knew what it was,” Mary Tracy, president of Scenic America, said in a press release. “His continued enthusiasm for sharing his unparalleled knowledge of the billboard industry is invaluable to those of use in the scenic conservation movement.
Other members of Scenic America also praised Floyd for “not being afraid to expose the truth behind billboard bullies.”
Floyd, a former professor of real estate at the University of Georgia, was one of the founders of Scenic America and served as its president from 1983-97. He has testified to congressional committees about the Highway Beautification Act on several occasions and served on the national advisory committee.
Scenic America officials noted that Floyd has provided assistance and expertise on billboard issues to over 20 state and local governments and has authorized many articles and white papers on the billboard industry.
He is currently working on the 10th edition of his book, “Real Estate Principles.”
Others who have been honored with the lifetime award are Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady; Joseph R. Riley, former mayor of Charleston, S.C.
