A Salisbury teen told police officers he was shot while playing football in a park early in the afternoon Wednesday.

Kenneth Leroy, 17, claimed that he and his friends were playing football near 530 Harrell St. when they heard two gunshots.

Leroy told police that he didn’t notice that he had been shot until one of his friends pointed out that he was bleeding from his right shin.

Leroy told officers he then went to his cousin’s house where he used hydrogen peroxide on the wound and bandaged it, and then fell asleep for several hours.

He said he later woke up in pain from the gunshot wound and went to his mother’s house.

Leroy’s mother told officers that when he arrived he was crying, shirtless and wet, and that she took Leroy to a hospital.

According to police, X-rays showed no bullet in Leroy’s leg, no internal injury to his leg and no exit wound.

Deputy Police Chief Steve Whitley stressed that the police department takes all reports of shootings very seriously, but that “we are very skeptical of his version of the events and we are looking into it.”

“There are a whole lot of unanswered questions that need to be addressed,” he said.

The incident is still under investigation.
