Thieves apparently sunk to a new low over the holiday weekend.
They took a septic tank cover from a location on Poplar Post Lane in Rockwell.
The metal cover was apparently targeted for sale to recycling businesses.
According to a report from Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the cover, valued at $500, was taken between 6 p.m. July 2 and 3 p.m. on July 3.
Capt. John Sifford noted that deputies and investigators have stayed busy with incidents ranging from vehicle thefts to a pipe bomb and numerous home break-ins and thefts.
Following are some of the incidents over the past few days:
• A pipe bomb destroyed a mailbox and brick mailbox holder on Misenheimer Road in Rockwell.
Stacy Leanne Miller reported the box and holder were damaged $500.
• A stained glass window at Bethel Luthern Church, 355 East Ridge Road, was broken by vandals on July 5.
• An estimated $2,100 worth of building materials were taken from a home under construction at 3425 Statesville Blvd. The theft occurred between June 29 and July 2.
• Norma Yolanda Jacob of Durham reported the theft of a black 2000 Volkswagen Beetle, valued at $5,500, from 6275 S. Main St. The theft occurred between June 11 and July 1.
• Jerry Winecoff of Fair Bluff Avenue reported the theft of three refrigerators, a Frigidaire washer/dryer, three doors and three fenders from a 1968 Mercury.
The items were taken from a residence on Lamb Drive between June 24 and July 3.
• Shonn Lee Marthers of Joyner Lane reported the theft of a 32-inch Magnavox flat screen TV and prescription medicine. Total value of items taken was put at $1,310. The break-in occurred between July 2 and July 3.
• Deputies recovered a 1998 Ford Contour which had been reported stolen. The vehicle was found on Parkside Drive.
• Jack S. Kepley Jr., of Bringle Ferry Road, reported the theft of a Honda recreational vehicle valued at $900. The theft occurred on July 4 between noon and 4:30 p.m.
• Two bicycles were stolen from a residence on Falcon Lane. The bikes were taken between July 4 and July 5.
A deputy responding to the report of the stolen bikes found another bike at the location that did not belong there.
• Robert Allan Hovater reported the theft of a 1991 Alfa Romero on July 5. The car was later recovered.
