SALISBURY — University of Alabama graduate and current Chattanooga, Tenn., resident Spencer Cummings has been chosen as the first Miss Cheerwine.
Born in High Point, Cummings grew up near Salisbury, home of the 94-year-old cherry-flavored soft drink.
Cheerwine officials describe Cummings’ selection as an appointment — “a brand ambassador,” who will represent the soft drink during a promotional tour across the South this summer.
It will be called the “Miss Cheerwine Summer Legend Tour.”
The company said it chose the 23-year-old Cummings from “a pool of stellar candidates,” and a press release describes her as vivacious, charismatic and possessing the requisite Southern charm.”
In her van tour this summer, Cummings will be meeting Cheerwine fans and introducing the soft drink to new audiences at events and concerts from June through August.
Her tour begins Friday in the Raleigh-Durham area.
Cheerwine has only recently become available in Chattanooga, as the company has made a concerted expansion effort in Tennessee.
“Born and bred a North Carolina girl, I introduced all of my friends and college roommates to the drink,” Cummings said in a release, “and brought back cases of Cheerwine before we could buy it in Chattanooga, so I feel I’ve been an ambassador all my life.”
She added that she can’t wait “to communicate my true love for Cheerwine.”
“Spencer has all of the qualities we were looking for in a brand ambassador,” says Tom Barbitta, vice president of marketing for Cheerwine. “She’s smart, she’s sweet, she’s personable, she’s a true fan and we are delighted she will be representing Cheerwine this summer.”
