U.S. Sen. Kay R. Hagan, D-NC, announced Friday that seven North Carolina fire departments will receive a total of $740,222 from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. This year, Hagan has announced more than $11.1 million for 138 fire departments in North Carolina.

Area departments receiving funds include the city of Lexington, $95,535, and Silver Valley Volunteer Fire Department, also in Lexington, $47,646."These North Carolina fire departments will receive crucial funding to help protect our communities and relieve local budget crunches," Hagan said. "Firefighters across North Carolina risk their lives on a daily basis, and I will continue working to ensure they have the resources they need to complete the job."

The AFG funds can be used to pay for training, equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
