The Corbin Hills Women's Golf Association celebrated the 50th anniversary of the club at a dinner at the Salisbury Country Club on Thursday, March 11. Entertainment was provided by magician Roger Jones. Thirty members attended.

The league was organized in June, 1960, by Mary Cobb McCombs. Her husband, Gaither McCombs, built Rowan Golf Club, the nine-hole course that was the beginning of the present-day Corbin Hills Golf Club. Erma Bonzo, who was the CHWGA's last surviving charter member, died on January 19, 2010. Two members who joined in 1961, Thelma Boulus and Lucy Brown, attended the event.

In addition to weekly play April-October, Corbin Hills Women's Golf Association sponsors the Grace Rodgers Spring Handicap, the Mary Cobb McCombs Founder's Day Member-Member Tournament and the Fall Championship Tournament. Former member Judy Cristman was the club champion eleven times. Current member Mary Seaford has won the championship seven times (1992, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004). Current members who have won the club championship are Lucy Brown (4 times), Becky Isenhour (4 times), Susan Morris (3 times), and Ruth Bowles (1 time).

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
