LANDIS — The Board of Aldermen will host a meeting with N.C. Railroad Co. and Department of Transportation officials Tuesday to discuss the expansion of the rail corridor and other proposed changes.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at town hall, 312 S. Main St.
Officials will discuss the proposed installation of a second track along the railroad from Salisbury to North Kannapolis.
Town Administrator Reed Linn said there used to be a second track in Landis, but it was taken up sometime in the 1970s.
Officials will also discuss which railroad crossings will close and where connections will be made, as well as straightening curves in tracks to allow trains to travel faster and improve clearances, according to N.C. Railroad's Web site.
"It's a community meeting where the citizens can ask questions," Linn said.
According to the N.C. Railroad Co.'s Web site, it will cost $29 million to restore double tracks from Salisbury to Kannapolis.
The N.C. Railroad Co. owns and manages the 317-mile rail corridor extending from Morehead City to Charlotte.
The company has met with surrounding municipalities, including China Grove in late 2009, to talk about the plans and concerns about them. Railroad officials agreed to meet with town officials and residents.
