Staff report
A Woodleaf man claims he accidentally shot himself in the leg, but investigators aren't convinced that's what happened.
Mark Andrew Harrison, 29, of 173 Coley Farm Road, was transported by Rowan EMS to Rowan Regional Medical Center around 2 a.m. Tuesday for treatment of a wound to his leg.
Capt. John Sifford said Harrison called 911 around 1:15 a.m. and reported he had shot himself and needed an ambulance at the intersection of Coley Farm Road and Powell Road.
Deputy Jerry Crowell responded and talked with Harrison, who said he had been "messing around' with a .22 caliber rifle earlier in the day and had fired several Yellow Jacket hollow-point rounds.
He also told the deputy he had been drinking and at some point and he felt immense pain in his leg. And he wasn't sure where one of the bullets went.
Sifford said deputies talked with Harrison's father and his uncle but were unable to find the rifle.
According to the Sheriff's Office report, Harrison sustained a 1-inch laceration on his left calf, midway between his knee and ankle.
