Staff reports

A Mocksville woman was airlifted to a Winston-Salem hospital this morning after driving into a city garbage truck on Statesville Boulevard.

Kristan Young, 42, of Mocksville, was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center shortly after the 8:30 a.m. accident.

Salisbury firefighters worked for several minutes to extract Young from the car.

Salisbury Police Deputy Chief Steve Whitley said Young was conscious and alert, but sustained head trauma and broken bones.

According to the preliminary police report, Young drove her 2005 Pontiac Sunfire into the back of the stopped truck. She was going an estimated 40 miles per hour on impact.

Peppy Lopez, a city sanitation worker, said he had just dumped a roll-out cart when he caught a glimpse of the car. He jumped out of the way just as the car went under the truck.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
