Two Rowan County women who walked more than 20 miles in 2008 for breast cancer are hosting a weekend fundraiser.

Brenda Wassum and Gretchen McCall are having a hot dog/chili sale at Granite Lake Park on Saturday to raise money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte.

"We are walking again. This year we are starting off with a fundraiser," Wassum said.

She and McCall have participated in the October walk for the past two years. McCall's teenage son, Justin Pearson will also join them this year. The fundraiser is from noon-4 p.m.

The two will also have a raffle and sell breast cancer awareness items, including T-shirts, bags, blankets and hats.

Wassum made the blankets and her mother, Doris Dolby, made crocheted hats.

"Our hearts are in it all the way," Wassum said.

The walk is October 23-24. Each person who participates has to raise $1,800.

The women walk in honor of the women in their lives who have died or survived breast cancer.

Wassum and McCall plan to have other fundraisers throughout the year.

Granite Lake Park is located on North Salisbury Avenue, U.S. 52, across from Kerns Street.

A new state health rule gives restaurants the option of permitting dogs and cats in outdoor dining areas, so long as the pets are on leashes or otherwise restrained. What do you think of allowing pets in outdoor dining areas?
  • Definitely a tail-wagging idea.
  • Makes me want to barf.
  • I'll have to chew on it a while before deciding.
