Each year, the quilt show at The Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks becomes more exciting as frail works of art from years gone by are displayed side by side with contemporary interpretations of similar patterns.

The 26th annual show opened Sunday and runs through Tuesday. There is no admission fee.

This year's theme "Footloose: Stomping Out Alzheimer's Disease." It also features challenge squares for the 2010 Memory Walk fundraiser. A display of "art shoes" will also be set up to promote a contest that will close in the fall with a shoe exhibit and auction at Waterworks gallery.

The show continues from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. today and Tuesday.

The show includes quilts of all types and styles and in all phases of completion. Organizers have invited people to display old quilts with histories, new quilts showing innovative techniques, quilt tops, quilted clothing items and quilted craft items. Many items are family heirlooms.

From rich silks embroidered entirely by hand to equally impressive pieces done with computerized machines, the works are breath taking.

Made from carefully chosen selections of coordinated fabrics to rag bags and cast off clothing, each entry has a story to tell. From a quilt that had binding finished one day before the show to a quilt that is dated 1886, there is something of interest to everyone attending the exhibition. More than 70 bed quilts, wall hanging, children's games, and clothing items continue to be on exhibit.

Quilts are not judged, but are open for viewing by the general public. Organizers ask those attending the show to wear gloves if they touch any of the quilts on display. No food or drinks will be allowed in the exhibit area.

Many members of the Salisbury Rowan Quilter's Guild and the Starry Nights Quilt Guild will have their work on display.

The Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks is located at 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury.

Lutheran Home is a ministry of Lutheran Services for the Aging based in Salisbury.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
