Occupation: Retired teacher and part-time English/writing teacher at Hood Theological Seminary

Age: 68

Background: Born and raised in Salisbury

Education: Earned a bachelor's degree in English from Bennett College in Greensboro. Continued her education with a master's degree in journalism from New York University.

Career path/boards: An English teacher for the Salisbury-Rowan School System for more than 30 years. Much of her time was spent teaching at Salisbury High. Trustee for the Rowan Museum and a member of the Zion Lutheran Connection.

Family: Husband, Fred; son, Fredrick Evans; daughter, Janine Evans Davis. Four grandchildren: Kristen Evans, Adria Davis, Lauryn Davis and Fredrick Evans Jr.

Role models: Grandparents Dr. J.E.K. Aggrey and Rose Aggrey, father Spencer Lancaster and mother Abna Lancaster.

Quote you live by: "One step won't take you very far, you've got to keep on walking. One word won't tell folks who you are, you've got to keep on talking. One inch won't make you very tall, you've got to keep on growing. One little deed won't do it all, you've got to keep on doing."

What legacy do you want to leave behind: My commitment to family life, education, religion, community and unselfishness.

What does Barack Obama's win as the nation's first African-American president signify for you: Barack Obama's winning was an historic victory for the American people and one that has made me extremely proud.

I hope his presidency will bring a dramatic yet positive change for America. I believe he is a man of integrity and I wish him continued success. To me, President Obama is the personification of the American dream.
