SALISBURY — Residents throughout Rowan County saw the first snow of the year Sunday evening, but according to meteorologists, it’s not going to last.

In Salisbury and throughout Rowan County residents saw snow begin to fall shortly before dusk.

“There are periods of light snow likely to continue for next several hours,” Meteorologist Bryan McAvoy of the National Weather Service said Sunday evening.

There were a few periods of light snow with a dusting around an inch on Sunday evening.

The snow began to fall lightly around 6 p.m. with bigger flakes hitting the roads as the hour passed.

As the week progresses, McAvoy said the weather is expected to be warmer.

“The first band of snow is moving quite quickly,” McAvoy said.

Today he said expect the highs to be near the 50s to upper 40s and the temperature up to about 60 on Wednesday.

McAvoy said Rowan could see showers late Wednesday.

Traffic collisions were reported throughout the county. Officials were responding to wrecks and were unavailable for comment. According to emergency communications dispatch, collisions were reported throughout the county including South Main Street and Mahaley Avenue.

The N.C. Highway Patrol, local police and other agencies responded to these collisions.
