The Rowan County United Way has received a $137,500 grant from United Way Worldwide to be used to focus on teacher effectiveness.
The announcement came Wednesday at the agency's annual meeting.
The grant will make it possible for the agency to look at teachers who are effective in what they do. The United Way hopes to establish a coalition to assist in this endeavor.
The Rowan United Way is one of 11 communities in the nation chosen for the initiative called Teachers Matter.
Money from the grant, which was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will be used to hire a part-time employee to help implement the program.
The challenge for Rowan County is to find and do what works.
"As a school system, it's very exciting to be working with the United Way. It's one more example of partnerships with our community," said Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent Judy Grissom.
The goal is to see what works in successful schools and put those lessons to work for every child in a classroom in every school. The United Way is tasked to assist in developing strategies to increase teacher effectiveness.
United Way Worldwide was formerly called United Way of America.
