African-American History Breakfast Feb. 24

Rufty-Holmes Senior Center will host its annual African-American History Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 24, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the center. The program speaker will be Audrey Kates Bailey, retired director of public relations for the N.C. Community College system, and former commentator for UNC-TV’s “North Carolina Now” broadcast.

Cost for the buffet breakfast is $6 per person at the door, but reservations are requested by calling the center at 704-216-7714 by Feb. 20. Sponsors assisting with the event are Hairston Funeral Home and the J.P. Johnson Memorial Society.

The center has hosted the breakfast since 1994 when first suggested by the late Salisbury Mayor Wiley Lash who was a member of Rufty-Holmes’ Board of Directors. Each year older adults have gathered to learn, acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of black Americans on the national, state and local levels.

Rufty-Holmes Senior Center serves as the county’s aging resource center, providing community-based programs and services that promote independent living and enrich the quality of life for local senior adults. The center is a member agency of the Rowan County United Way; and is supported by federal, state and local government funds, foundation grants, business partnerships, fees for service and private contributions.
