‘Legacy of a Leader’ concert to honor Kennedy

EAST SPENCER — Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church will celebrate the life of Jean B. Kennedy with a special “Legacy of a Leader” concert Sunday afternoon at the church.

The church is extending an open invitation to the public, including Kennedy’s former students and teaching colleagues.

Kennedy, a member of the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education since 2006, taught in the school system for 361/2 years prior to her retirement in 2004.

Sunday’s concert and program will be held at 3 p.m. at the church, 940 S. Long St., East Spencer.

The Voices of God’s Children Inc. will be guest performers.

The singers represent various churches and denominations of the Piedmont Triad. Based in Winston-Salem, the multi-racial, multi-cultural community choir is dedicated to preserving the African-American music known as Negro spirituals.

The group was founded in 2008 by James Daniel Smith, who is deceased. Marion “Pete” Thomas is now the director. The choir has more than 30 members representing 20 different secular and non-secular organizations.

A reception will follow the program in the Southern City Hospitality Area. All contributions during the day go toward establishment of the Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church Endowment Fund.
